The honest take

At $1,556 versus $1,585 these are near enough the same price, so this comes down to what kind of night you want. The St. Regis has 257 reviews at 8.8 and round-the-clock butler service, breakfast, and Bloody Mary lore at the King Cole Bar. The Waldorf has fewer reviews logged and no guest score given, but it holds a spa and pet allowance that the St. Regis lacks, plus that unmistakable Park Avenue lobby. Book the St. Regis if you want a known quantity; book the Waldorf if you want to be inside a piece of New York architectural history.

The look and the feel

Waldorf Astoria New York

The Waldorf occupies its 1931 Art Deco tower on Park Avenue, all inlaid marble floors, a clock in the lobby that has become a meeting-point landmark, and a scale of public room that belongs to an era when hotels were built as small cities. The 2023 restoration kept the bones - the starburst motifs, the bronze, the travertine - while updating the guest floors, so the feeling is of walking through a restored ocean liner rather than a boutique property. Its dining rooms and roof garden carry the same formal weight as the lobby: this is a hotel that assumes you know how to move through grand space.

Guests who want to stay inside a genuine Art Deco monument and don't mind a slightly more institutional, sightseeing-heavy stretch of Park Avenue.

The St. Regis New York

The St. Regis sits at Fifth Avenue and 55th, a Beaux-Arts building from 1904 with the kind of old-New-York gravity that comes from actually being old New York. The lobby is gilt and marble under a coffered ceiling, and the King Cole Bar's Maxfield Parrish mural has presided over cocktail hour since Prohibition ended. Butler service on every floor is the house signature - not a spa gimmick but staff who remember your name and iron your shirt without being asked. It draws a crowd that wants discretion and Fifth Avenue proximity more than spectacle.

Guests who want old-money Fifth Avenue polish, butler service, and breakfast handled without a second thought.

The St. Regis, marginally cheaper, has no listed spa and doesn't take pets, both of which the Waldorf offers.

The Waldorf's Deco lobby is the more theatrical space to stand in, but the St. Regis's King Cole Bar is the more beautiful room to actually sit in for an hour.

“Fantastic Food and Exceptional Service”

We had a wonderful lunch at The St. Regis New York on 28th July, and the whole experience was exceptional from start to finish. I visited with my friend and her toddler, and the food was absolutely delicious. What really made our lunch so memorable, though, was the incredible service. Every member of staff was warm and welcoming, and they went out of their way to make my friend’s child feel so special. A particular

“It is a 4 star hotel, at the most”

First, forget about the butler experience. It does not exist. We called them and they never came. The building, despite a recent renovation, is old and in poor condition. The service is indifferent. Our room was only available at 6 pm despite a pre-planned 2 pm arrival. Bathroom does not have a rain shower and bath products are from different brands, most of them unknown, no consistency. There is no liquid soap in th
