The honest take

Book the St. Regis if you want classic New York grandeur, butler service and two restaurants for nearly half the price. Book the Four Seasons if a proper spa and the sheer volume of I.M. Pei's soaring limestone lobby matter more to you than saving over a thousand dollars a night. Both sit within a couple of blocks of each other off Fifth Avenue, so location is a wash. At $2,874 versus $1,556, the Four Seasons has to earn its premium on space and wellness facilities alone, since the St. Regis lacks nothing structural by comparison.

The look and the feel

Four Seasons Hotel New York

I.M. Pei designed this tower in the early 1990s and it shows: a 33-storey limestone block with a lobby that feels like walking into a bank vault built for giants, all book-matched marble, onyx-lit alabaster ceiling fixtures and a hush that swallows Midtown traffic whole. Rooms are among the largest in the city, with deep sills and floor-to-ceiling windows that pull in raw daylight off Billionaire's Row. It draws a crowd that wants scale and quiet over theatre, financiers and visiting executives more than romantics.

Best for those who want maximum room size, a dedicated spa day and understated modern luxury without much fuss.

The St. Regis New York

The St. Regis opened in 1904 and still carries its Beaux-Arts bones, gilt mouldings, chandeliers and the King Cole Bar with its Maxfield Parrish mural presiding over the room since 1932. Butlers on every floor are a holdover from John Jacob Astor's original conceit of hotel-as-private-club, and the public rooms have the warm, layered feel of old money rather than corporate polish. It suits guests who want ceremony and history over minimalist calm, the kind who linger at the bar rather than the spa.

Best for those who want the theatre of old New York, a butler, and dinner at a bar with a hundred years of stories behind it.

At $1,556 the St. Regis gives up an onsite spa and pet-friendly rooms, the two things the Four Seasons has that it doesn't.

The St. Regis is the more beautiful room to sit in, because Pei's lobby is impressive the way an airport terminal is impressive, while the St. Regis's gilt and Parrish mural still feel like a place, not a monument.

“Fantastic Food and Exceptional Service”

We had a wonderful lunch at The St. Regis New York on 28th July, and the whole experience was exceptional from start to finish. I visited with my friend and her toddler, and the food was absolutely delicious. What really made our lunch so memorable, though, was the incredible service. Every member of staff was warm and welcoming, and they went out of their way to make my friend’s child feel so special. A particular

“It is a 4 star hotel, at the most”

First, forget about the butler experience. It does not exist. We called them and they never came. The building, despite a recent renovation, is old and in poor condition. The service is indifferent. Our room was only available at 6 pm despite a pre-planned 2 pm arrival. Bathroom does not have a rain shower and bath products are from different brands, most of them unknown, no consistency. There is no liquid soap in th
