The honest take

Book the Waldorf Astoria if you want New York history and roughly $1,260 a night saved, book the Four Seasons if you want the most polished, quiet, service-heavy stay on Billionaire's Row. The Four Seasons runs $2,845 a night versus the Waldorf's $1,585, and the only listed facility gap is breakfast, which the Four Seasons includes and the Waldorf's listing does not mention. Both are 0.6km apart in Midtown, so location is nearly a wash; the choice is really about architecture and atmosphere rather than logistics.

The look and the feel

Four Seasons Hotel New York

I.M. Pei designed this tower in 1993, and it shows in the limestone monolith and the enormous 22-foot lobby ceiling, all pale stone and recessed light meant to feel like a cathedral of restraint rather than gilt. Rooms are famously large for Manhattan, with deep soaking tubs and floor-to-ceiling windows that pull in the kind of light other hotels have to fake. The crowd here is finance and old-guard luxury travellers who want anonymity and a concierge who remembers their name; nothing about the place performs history, it performs the present done extremely well.

Guests who want the most consistent, understated five-star service experience and don't need a story attached to the building.

Waldorf Astoria New York

The Waldorf is the real Art Deco article, opened in 1931, its lobby a symphony of inlaid marble floors, a giant mosaic compass rose, and the Waldorf clock that has stood there since the original hotel on 5th Avenue. Cole Porter's piano lived in the Peacock Alley bar, and the whole building carries that pre-war glamour in its bronze fittings, sunburst motifs and travertine columns, even after a lengthy renovation. It draws people who want to feel the weight of the building's history, and Park Avenue outside has that same formal, old-money hush after dark.

Guests who want to stay somewhere with genuine architectural and cultural history and don't mind trading a bit of polish for atmosphere.

The Waldorf's listing doesn't mention breakfast being included, so guests there may pay separately for what comes with the Four Seasons room rate; everything else on the facility lists matches.

The Waldorf is the more beautiful place to stand in, because its Art Deco lobby is an irreplaceable piece of New York rather than a very good modern execution of luxury.
