The honest take

Book the Carlyle. It's cheaper at $1,378 versus $1,590, rated the same at 9.2, and delivers more character per square foot. Park Hyatt earns its price with a pool, pet-friendliness, parking and a bar the Carlyle's listing doesn't claim, so if those matter to you specifically, pay the difference. Otherwise the Carlyle is the better night for less.

The look and the feel

The Carlyle

The Carlyle has occupied its Art Deco tower on 76th and Madison since 1930, and it still moves like an Upper East Side institution rather than a hotel. Dorothy Draper's influence lingers in the bones of the place, all lacquer, brass and deep colour, while Bemelmans Bar keeps its Ludwig Bemelmans murals of Central Park rabbits and elephants on the walls, lit low, piano going most nights. Rooms run to chintz and mahogany rather than minimalism, the kind of interior that hasn't chased trends and doesn't need to. The crowd is old money, visiting diplomats, people who have been coming for decades.

Right for people who want New York's old guard glamour, a proper piano bar and rooms that feel lived-in rather than showroom-new.

Park Hyatt New York

Park Hyatt New York occupies the lower floors of One57, a glass Christian de Portzamparc tower on 57th Street, and the interiors lean cool and contemporary, Yabu Pushelberg by reputation for this era of Hyatt flagships, all pale stone, walnut and restrained brass rather than the Carlyle's velvet clutter. Ceilings run high, the lobby feels engineered for light rather than atmosphere, and the indoor pool and spa give it a resort feel absent from most Manhattan hotels this central. It draws a business and international leisure crowd who want new and immaculate over storied.

Right for guests who want a pool, pet-friendly rooms and slick contemporary design a few blocks from Central Park's southern edge.

The Carlyle, being cheaper, has no listed pool, hot tub, parking or pet policy, and no bar called out separately from its lounge, so guests wanting a swim or a dog-friendly stay lose out.

The Carlyle is the more beautiful place to be, because Bemelmans Bar and its 1930s bones have a warmth and specificity no glass tower interior, however well done, can manufacture.

“Kind and attentive staff during the visit, cold room, scabies following visit”

I came here for two nights with my daughter and stayed in a room on the 12th floor with two twin beds. The room would not warm up due to the cold temperatures outside. The staff was very responsive and sent up a very kind technician immediately to make sure the heat was working correctly. They told us that due to the building being so old, there wasn't more they could do besides provide space heaters, which helped s

“Wonderful hotel”

I have stayed multiple times at the Carlyle for pleasure, but this stay was different as I needed to be near the hospital where my husband was having surgery. The entire staff was kind, patient, and extraordinarily accommodating. Every morning at breakfast they would even make a special bag of the daily papers and pastries to bring to him at the hospital without my even asking. This is just a small example of how the

“Good but not great”

There are “hotel people” and Air BnB people. We are definitely hotel people, especially iconic hotels like the Carlyle, which is Rosewood branded. We have been fortunate to stay at top hotels around the world, like The Imperial Hotel in Vienna, the Peninsula in Paris and Bangkok, and Four Seasons around the globe, among many others. Our initial impression of the Carlyle was unfortunately not great, due to the lady

“Perfect Start to a Milestone Family Journey”

Our one-night stay at Park Hyatt New York on July 10, 2026, was the perfect start to a once-in-a-lifetime family trip celebrating a milestone birthday for our son. From New York, we would continue on to Germany, Austria, Jordan, and Egypt, and we wanted the first hotel of the journey to be special. Park Hyatt New York exceeded our expectations in nearly every way. Despite having no Hyatt status, the hotel recognized

“Excellent stay and will return”

Excellent visit to the Park Hyatt. This was a new hotel for and we will be returning. The hotel was clean and had a newer feeling. Hallways and doorways were clean and inviting.

“A true example of excellent service recovery!”

As a loyal World of Hyatt Globalist member, I have always regarded Park Hyatt as one of my favorite luxury hotel brands, which is why I had very high expectations for my stay at Park Hyatt New York. Unfortunately, my stay did not begin as expected. After returning to the hotel in the afternoon, I discovered that my original room had an extremely strong chemical odor, making it uncomfortable to stay inside. After spe
