Book The Carlyle. It costs less than half of the Four Seasons at $1,254 versus $2,874 a night, has more reviews at a similarly high guest rating (9.2 versus 9.5), and lacks nothing on the Four Seasons' facility list. The Four Seasons has pet allowance, parking and a bar the Carlyle's listing doesn't mention, and its I.M. Pei tower on 57th Street is the more monumental building, but for most travellers the Carlyle's Upper East Side address and old-money charm are the better use of the money.

Pei designed the tower in the early 1990s, and it shows: a 52-storey limestone shaft rising off Billionaire's Row, with a lobby by Frank Nicholson that goes for hushed, honey-toned grandeur, dark wood, fresh flowers, pale stone underfoot. Rooms are large by Manhattan standards, done in soft neutrals with floor-to-ceiling windows that pull in a lot of light over Central Park or the skyline. The crowd is finance and fashion executives and their expense accounts, and the place runs with the kind of quiet, anticipatory service Four Seasons is known for worldwide.

The Carlyle
The Carlyle opened in 1930, an Art Deco tower on East 76th Street that has been the private hideaway of presidents and old New York money for generations, and it still feels like it. The lobby is small and clubby, all dark wood panelling and antique furniture rather than marble expanse, and Bemelmans Bar down the hall still has its original 1940s murals by Ludwig Bemelmans, the low light and piano jazz that fills the room after ten. Rooms lean traditional English country house rather than glassy modern, chintz and mahogany over minimalism, and the whole building carries the sense of a private club that happens to rent rooms.
Right for guests who want old New York atmosphere, a legendary bar, and a quieter Upper East Side street a short walk from the Met.
The Carlyle's listing doesn't mention pet allowance, on-site parking or a standalone bar/lounge separate from its restaurants, all of which the Four Seasons offers; otherwise the difference is address and scale rather than amenities.

“Kind and attentive staff during the visit, cold room, scabies following visit”
I came here for two nights with my daughter and stayed in a room on the 12th floor with two twin beds. The room would not warm up due to the cold temperatures outside. The staff was very responsive and sent up a very kind technician immediately to make sure the heat was working correctly. They told us that due to the building being so old, there wasn't more they could do besides provide space heaters, which helped s

“Wonderful hotel”
I have stayed multiple times at the Carlyle for pleasure, but this stay was different as I needed to be near the hospital where my husband was having surgery. The entire staff was kind, patient, and extraordinarily accommodating. Every morning at breakfast they would even make a special bag of the daily papers and pastries to bring to him at the hospital without my even asking. This is just a small example of how the

There are “hotel people” and Air BnB people. We are definitely hotel people, especially iconic hotels like the Carlyle, which is Rosewood branded. We have been fortunate to stay at top hotels around the world, like The Imperial Hotel in Vienna, the Peninsula in Paris and Bangkok, and Four Seasons around the globe, among many others.
