Book the Mandarin Oriental: it's cheaper at $1,474 versus $1,556, rated higher by guests (9.1 vs 8.8 over more reviews), and it has a spa, pool and pet allowance the St. Regis lacks. The St. Regis wins on pure atmosphere and address, sitting on Fifth Avenue rather than above a shopping mall at Columbus Circle, but on the numbers and facilities the Mandarin is the stronger booking. Choose St. Regis only if the King Cole Bar and butler service matter more to you than a pool.
The St. Regis opened in 1904, built by John Jacob Astor IV, and the Beaux-Arts limestone facade on Fifth Avenue still announces old money rather than new hotel money. The King Cole Bar has the Maxfield Parrish mural behind it and is where the Bloody Mary was supposedly invented; it fills with a mix of tourists paying for the story and regulars who don't need to be told it. Public rooms run to gilt mirrors, marble floors and low gold light, the whole place tuned to a pre-war register of formality, with liveried doormen and the 24-hour butler service as the mechanism that keeps that formality running smoothly rather than a gimmick.
Right for people who want the theatre of an old New York institution, the mural bar, the butlers, the sense of being inside a building with a history rather than a view.
The Mandarin Oriental sits high in the Deutsche Bank Center tower above Columbus Circle, and the pitch is the view: floor-to-ceiling windows over Central Park, the skyline, the Hudson. The interiors lean into Mandarin Oriental's house style, warm woods, silk-toned textiles, Asian-inflected calm rather than European gilt, and the 35th-floor lobby lands as a deliberate reveal after the elevator ride up from the mall concourse below. The 75-foot indoor pool and full spa give it a resort quality the older Fifth Avenue hotels don't try for, and the crowd is more finance-and-media than old-guard society.
Right for people who want a pool and spa, sweeping views over the park and skyline, and a more contemporary, wellness-oriented luxury stay.
At $1,474 the Mandarin actually adds a spa, a 75-foot pool and pet allowance that the pricier St. Regis doesn't offer, so here the cheaper hotel gives up nothing on the list; what it gives up is the St. Regis's Fifth Avenue address and its century of institutional atmosphere.
The St. Regis is the more beautiful room to stand in, with the Beaux-Arts detailing and the Parrish mural doing something the Mandarin's glass tower, for all its views, can't replicate.

“This is a review for the breakfast only.”
The St. Regis guests describe more consistently memorable, personalised luxury service, while Mandarin Oriental guests praise the views and breakfast but flag weak concierge and dated rooms, so St. Regis reviewers, aside from a few sharp complaints, come away more delighted overall.

“Fantastic Food and Exceptional Service”
We had a wonderful lunch at The St. Regis New York on 28th July, and the whole experience was exceptional from start to finish. I visited with my friend and her toddler, and the food was absolutely delicious. What really made our lunch so memorable, though, was the incredible service. Every member of staff was warm and welcoming, and they went out of their way to make my friend’s child feel so special. A particular
“It is a 4 star hotel, at the most”
First, forget about the butler experience. It does not exist. We called them and they never came. The building, despite a recent renovation, is old and in poor condition. The service is indifferent. Our room was only available at 6 pm despite a pre-planned 2 pm arrival. Bathroom does not have a rain shower and bath products are from different brands, most of them unknown, no consistency. There is no liquid soap in th
