The honest take
At $1,556 a night the St. Regis is a dollar cheaper than the Plaza's $1,562, and it carries a higher guest rating (8.8 vs 8.4) despite fewer reviews. The Plaza has facilities the St. Regis lacks, namely a spa and pet allowance, which matters if you're travelling with a dog or want treatments in-house. For pure hospitality and butler service, the St. Regis is the sharper booking; for spa access and the sheer theatre of the building, the Plaza wins.
The look and the feel
The Plaza
The Plaza opened in 1907, a Beaux-Arts wedding cake on the corner of Central Park, designed by Henry Hardenbergh who also gave New York the Dakota. The lobby runs long and gilded, chandeliers overhead, and the Palm Court still does its stagey afternoon tea under a stained-glass ceiling with a harpist somewhere in the room. Rooms lean hard into gold-plated bathroom fixtures and marble, more Gilded Age fantasy than restraint. It draws tourists doing New York properly, wedding parties, and people who want the building itself as much as the bed.
Right for first-time visitors and anyone who wants the postcard version of New York luxury, park views and afternoon tea included.
The St. Regis New York
The St. Regis sits a few blocks over on Fifth at 55th, opened in 1904 by John Jacob Astor IV, and it plays a quieter, more clubbable version of old New York wealth. The King Cole Bar off the lobby has the Maxfield Parrish mural and a low, dark-wood hush that the Plaza's public rooms never attempt. Butler service on every floor is the signature: someone unpacking your case, pressing a shirt, without being asked. It's the choice for people who want the grandeur handled discreetly rather than performed in the lobby.
Right for repeat travellers and business guests who want white-glove service without the tour-group traffic through the lobby.
Choosing the St. Regis over the Plaza means giving up the on-site spa and the option to bring a pet, both of which the Plaza offers.
The Plaza is the more theatrical, photographable building, but the St. Regis is the more beautiful room to actually sit in, thanks to the King Cole Bar and its hushed, mural-lit calm.

“Was shocked at how trashy things have become at the once very classy St. Regis.”
The Plaza's guests come away happier overall, as most reviews are glowing with only minor price gripes, while The St. Regis shows a sharper split between rave five-star praise and serious service failures.
“There are hotels that offer five-star service, and then there is The Plaza!!!”
There are hotels that offer five-star service, and then there is The Plaza. My recent stay was one of the most memorable hotel experiences I have ever had.
I wanted to surprise my wife during our stay, as I had purchased a beautiful Cartier piece of jewelry for our anniversary on the day we arrived. I reached out to the Guest Experience team a few days before our arrival, and from that moment on, they went above and

“Excellent stay, would definitely stay here again.”
Everything! Clean rooms, big rooms, excellent service.
Not much - double espressos at the bar were quite pricey (2 for $50) , however perhaps expected at a nice hotel.
Love the whole service and vibe. Beautiful all around.

“Fantastic Food and Exceptional Service”
We had a wonderful lunch at The St. Regis New York on 28th July, and the whole experience was exceptional from start to finish.
I visited with my friend and her toddler, and the food was absolutely delicious. What really made our lunch so memorable, though, was the incredible service. Every member of staff was warm and welcoming, and they went out of their way to make my friend’s child feel so special.

“It is a 4 star hotel, at the most”
First, forget about the butler experience. It does not exist. We called them and they never came. The building, despite a recent renovation, is old and in poor condition. The service is indifferent. Our room was only available at 6 pm despite a pre-planned 2 pm arrival. Bathroom does not have a rain shower and bath products are from different brands, most of them unknown, no consistency. There is no liquid soap in th
