The honest take

Four Seasons Sultanahmet is $884 and sits inside a former Ottoman prison in the old city, walking distance to Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. Mandarin Oriental Bosphorus is $1,008, on the water in Kuruçeşme, with a pool and hot tub the Sultanahmet property doesn't list. Both score 9.6, both have large review counts, so it comes down to what kind of Istanbul you want outside the door: minarets and museums, or a waterfront terrace. For a first visit built around the historic peninsula, book the Four Seasons; for a longer stay, or one with children, or one built around the Bosphorus itself, book the Mandarin Oriental.

The look and the feel

Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet

The building was Istanbul's central prison until the 1970s, and the neoclassical shell has been kept, with Turkish artisan work worked into the interiors in tile, brass and carved stone. Rooms carry a Turkish theme with neoclassical detailing, and bathrooms are marble with deep soaking tubs, a hotel-standard flourish rather than a period one. Seasons Restaurant sits in a glass pavilion in the courtyard garden, so breakfast and the well-known Sunday brunch happen under a fig tree with the old prison walls around you. The whole place trades on that tension between confinement and comfort, and it draws travellers who want the old city at arm's reach, mosque call to prayer included.

Right for people whose Istanbul is Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar, and who want to walk to all three.

Mandarin Oriental Bosphorus

Mandarin Oriental Bosphorus sits directly on the strait in Kuruçeşme, and the draw described in the listing is the water itself plus a wider spread of facilities: pool, hot tub, kids' club, playground, multilingual staff. Dining runs Italian, Mediterranean and Asian rather than a single Ottoman-inflected kitchen, which points to a more international, resort-like register than a heritage one. The listing doesn't name an architect or a design scheme, so beyond the setting and amenity list the interior character isn't something to invent here. What's clear is the address does the work: a Bosphorus-front hotel in Beşiktaş is a different holiday from one inside the Sultanahmet walls, closer to the nightlife and residential energy of the strait than to the mosques and museums.

Right for families or longer stays wanting a pool, a hot tub and a Bosphorus-front base with a kids' club.

Four Seasons Sultanahmet, the cheaper of the two, has no pool or hot tub on its list, so anyone wanting to swim or soak has to look elsewhere, unlike at the Mandarin Oriental.

The Four Seasons has the more charged and specific building, a former prison turned neoclassical courtyard hotel, which makes it the more interesting place to simply sit in, even without a pool.

“Sublime--no wonder it has 3 Michelin Keys!”

Pros: Unbeatable location for touring Sultanahmet (old town), especially for first-time visitors to the city. Exceptional staff: very attentive and friendly. Excellent restaurants--breakfast was great and dinner at Avlu was top-notch. Luxurious comfort, yet not ostentatious. The room was spacious and clean, the pillows and linens were a dream, as were the towels and bath products; the room temperature was easily

Cons: The shower pressure in our room could have been better.

“Not good!!”

This has been the worst service I’ve experienced at a luxury hotel. Service is extremely slow, especially from the kitchen, and many employees seem more focused on their phones or computers than guests. You can walk through the lobby without anyone acknowledging or greeting you. The housekeeping staff, however, has been outstanding. Overall, the service simply does not meet luxury hotel standards.
