The honest take

The Four Seasons Sultanahmet is $884 a night, rated 9.6 from 308 reviews, and sits inside a former Ottoman prison a few steps from the Blue Mosque. The Peninsula is $1,181, rated 9.4 from just 54 reviews, and occupies a new build on the Bosphorus in Karaköy with a pool the Four Seasons doesn't have. If it's the old city you've come for, book the Four Seasons; if you want water views, a pool, and a quieter Beyoğlu-side address, pay the premium for the Peninsula.

The look and the feel

Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet

This was Istanbul's central prison until the 1980s, and the bones of that building are still legible in the thick stone walls and the courtyard the cells once faced. Four Seasons converted it in the 1990s with a heavy hand of neoclassical detail and Turkish artisan work throughout, kilim motifs, hand-painted tile, brass fittings, marble bathrooms with deep soaking tubs. The Seasons Restaurant sits in a glass pavilion in that same courtyard garden, so breakfast happens under trees within sight of the old walls. It draws an older, culturally serious crowd who want to walk to Hagia Sophia and Topkapi rather than take a car to see them.

Right for travellers who want to be inside the old city's monuments on foot, and don't mind trading water views for Ottoman atmosphere.

The Peninsula Istanbul

The Peninsula's Istanbul outpost is a ground-up build on the Karaköy waterfront, part of the wave of new luxury development turning that old port district into a design and gallery quarter. Expect the brand's usual polish: indoor and outdoor pools, a full spa, a 24-hour gym, and dining split between Gallada and Topside Bar, the latter presumably named for its rooftop position over the Bosphorus. The about text is thin on interior detail, so beyond knowing it's new, well-serviced and water-facing, the specific materials and mood aren't confirmed here.

Right for travellers who want pool, spa and Bosphorus views and are happy being a short taxi from the historic sights.

Booking the Four Seasons over the Peninsula means giving up the pool and the Bosphorus-facing spa complex; it makes up ground with a pet allowance and a proper bar, neither of which the Peninsula's listing claims.

The Four Seasons wins on character, a repurposed 19th-century prison with a garden courtyard is simply a stranger, more memorable place to sit and drink coffee than a new hotel tower, however well finished.

Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet

10/10

“Sublime--no wonder it has 3 Michelin Keys!”

Pros: Unbeatable location for touring Sultanahmet (old town), especially for first-time visitors to the city. Exceptional staff: very attentive and friendly. Excellent restaurants--breakfast was great and dinner at Avlu was top-notch. Luxurious comfort, yet not ostentatious. The room was spacious and clean, the pillows and linens were a dream, as were the towels and bath products; the room temperature was easily

Cons: The shower pressure in our room could have been better.
