The honest take

Book Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam unless money genuinely doesn't matter. At $549 against $1,410 a night, it holds a 9.0 guest rating across 1,306 reviews, a real sample size, with a spa, indoor pool and butler service that cover the essentials. The Waldorf's 9.8 from 340 reviews is exceptional, but you are paying nearly three times as much for a smaller, more exclusive experience on a different stretch of canal.

The look and the feel

Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam

Six joined 17th-century canal palaces on the Herengracht, the grandest of Amsterdam's canals, restored with the kind of budget that lets original stucco ceilings and marble floors sit next to discreet contemporary lighting. Public rooms have the hush of a private bank: Peacock Alley for afternoon tea under chandeliers, the Vault Bar tucked into what was once literally a bank vault, all dark wood and low light. Rooms look over the canal or a courtyard garden, with high ceilings and deep windowsills that speak to the scale of the original merchant houses. This draws people who want the single most expensive room in the city and don't want to think about it twice.

Guests for whom the Herengracht address and Guerlain spa justify paying nearly triple, and who want the quietest, most exclusive canal-side experience in Amsterdam.

Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam

A former city hall and Admiralty building on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal, in the old town near the red light district, with a lobby that mixes Dutch civic gravity, thick stone, high arched windows, with French decorative flourish, gilt mirrors, patterned rugs. The courtyard garden and terrace give it a quieter, more domestic register than a typical grand hotel, somewhere to have coffee away from the street noise outside. Bridges restaurant does seafood under original beams, and the bar has the polish of a place that knows its own history without labouring the point. It suits people who want serious architecture and service without the top-tier price tag, and who don't mind being a short walk from a livelier, rougher part of the centre.

Guests who want genuine 5-star architecture, spa and dining in the old town, at under half the price, and don't mind the grittier streets nearby.

The Grand's listed facilities essentially match the Waldorf's aside from golf, which neither guest is likely to use in central Amsterdam; the real gap is scale of luxury and address, not amenities, with the Waldorf's six restored canal palaces and Guerlain spa sitting a clear notch above on exclusivity.

The Waldorf's six-palace Herengracht setting is the more beautiful place to simply stand in, but The Grand's converted city hall has more genuine historical weight for the money.

“We had a wonderful stay, the staff were absolutely exceptional, very polite and very helpful”

Location was excellent, the staff were exceptional. Attention to detail was very good from the staff. The hotel was comfortable and clean

I felt the room was disappointing, as we paid a huge amount for a suit, I was slightly disappointed by the room we received. In the spa there was no access to cold water!! Everything in the hotel was very expensive.

“Wonderful relaxing stay with great service”

Excellent location. Spacious room

The second bathroom was so big they could have put a shower in it instead of just a toilet. Also the basin the second bathroom was extremely tiny

“Except for Diego the disagreable waiter the rest was excellent”

I like the location the building the special amability of nearly all the staff and the restaurants

The bathroom having the toilette with no place to wash your hands and having to cross the shower to do so or step outside and enter again, and the step to go to the toilet for me is dangerous. A special mention of one waiter in the breakfast we had on the first morning. My husband was asking for his coffee with hot mi
