The honest take

Book Andaz Amsterdam if you want the stronger overall package: nearly half the price at $372 versus $699, a 9.4 guest rating from over 1,300 reviews, and a spa, pet-friendly policy and bar The Dylan doesn't list. The Dylan is the smaller, quieter, more discreet luxury option at more than double the cost, with no independently verifiable guest rating to weigh against Andaz's very strong one. Both sit on adjacent canals in the same stretch of the Grachtengordel, so location is essentially a wash. Unless you specifically want The Dylan's intimacy and Vinkeles, Andaz is the better booking on the numbers.

The look and the feel

The Dylan Amsterdam

The Dylan occupies a row of 17th-century canal houses on the Keizersgracht, once a theatre and a bank before Anouska Hempel's mid-90s renovation gave it its moody, theatrical hush: dark timber, deep reds and blacks, low lighting, a lot of velvet and hidden corners. It's only 41 rooms, each individually decorated, which makes it feel more like a private house than a hotel, and the restaurant Vinkeles occupies the old bakery at the back, all exposed brick and candlelight for serious French cooking. The crowd is older, moneyed, and there for discretion rather than spectacle - a bar/lounge that stays low-key rather than a scene.

Couples or solo travellers who want a quiet, old-money, almost clubby stay and don't mind paying for restraint.

Andaz Amsterdam, Prinsengracht

Andaz sits in a former public library on the Prinsengracht, and Marcel Wanders' interiors lean hard into Dutch maximalism: oversized botanical prints, a giant chandelier in the lobby lounge, chequerboard floors, velvet upholstery in saturated colour rather than The Dylan's shadow palette. Rooms have an open bathroom concept and canal or garden views, and Bluespoon restaurant draws on a hotel garden for European dishes with a playful edge. It reads younger and louder than its neighbour - design as conversation piece, a lobby people photograph, a bar that fills up with locals as much as guests.

Design-curious travellers, first-time visitors to Amsterdam, and anyone who wants a spa and a livelier bar scene without giving up five-star service.

At $372, Andaz already outguns The Dylan on facilities - it has the spa, the bar and pet-friendliness The Dylan's listing doesn't mention - so the trade-off runs the other way: paying more at The Dylan buys scale-down intimacy (just 41 rooms) and a specific hushed, theatrical atmosphere rather than any missing amenity.

The Dylan is the more atmospheric building - Hempel's shadowy, tactile interiors and the old bakery restaurant have more sense of history and restraint - but Wanders' work at Andaz is the more genuinely beautiful room-by-room design, bolder and more memorable to actually sit in.

“Amazing experience”

I don't like to write reviews but wanted to make an exception to talk about our stay at The Dylan. Everything was just right, from the location, the rooms - we staid in two recently renovated rooms which were perfect and incredibly quiet-, the restaurant - we had dinner, breakfast and lunch at their brasserie-, to every single interaction with the staff who went out of their way to give us the best experience possibl

“Fun and funky and full of charm in the quiet heart of the city”

We loved almost everything about our stay at the Andaz. It is located on a pretty canal in a quiet neighborhood, but restaurants are close by and it is with walking distance of the entire city. The staff is lovely, beds comfortable, breakfast so good and it has fun art everywhere. I only took one star away because of the room layout. I’m ok with the sinks in the main area, but it was hard with a stand alone shower. W
