The honest take

At $701 versus $699, price isn't the deciding factor here, so it comes down to what you want from Amsterdam. Waldorf Astoria gives you six joined canal palaces, a Guerlain spa with an indoor pool, and a 9.8 rating from 340 guests. The Dylan is smaller and quieter, just 41 rooms, with no spa or pool listed, but a serious reputation for its restaurant and a more theatrical, boutique feel. Book Waldorf for the full five-star infrastructure; book The Dylan if you want to disappear into a single, tightly curated building.

The look and the feel

Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam

Six 17th-century canal houses knocked together on the Herengracht, the grandest stretch of Amsterdam's grachtengordel, so the bones are genuinely monumental: high sash windows, garden courtyards, stone facades built by merchants who wanted the whole street to know it. Inside it plays the international grand-hotel game properly, chandeliers, marble corridors, a spa with an indoor pool tucked under the old brickwork, Peacock Alley for people-watching over coffee. It's a hotel for guests who want the trophy address and the full five-star machinery running underneath it, not a boutique secret.

Waldorf Astoria suits guests who want a full-service five-star experience, spa and pool included, in a genuinely grand historic setting.

The Dylan Amsterdam

A converted 17th-century building on the Keizersgracht turned into a small, design-forward hotel, 41 rooms each decorated differently rather than to a single template, which gives it a private, almost domestic scale next to something like the Waldorf. The listing points to Vinkeles for French cooking and a lounge bar rather than a spa or pool, so the emphasis is squarely on food, service, and the intimacy of a smaller house on a quieter stretch of canal. It reads as a hotel for people who want a serious kitchen and a room that doesn't look like anyone else's, not a resort-style stay.

The Dylan suits guests who want an intimate, individually designed boutique stay built around a top restaurant rather than resort facilities.

The Dylan gives up the spa, indoor pool, and pet allowance that the Waldorf lists, so anyone wanting to swim or bring a dog needs to look elsewhere.

The Waldorf is the more spectacular building, six canal palaces are hard to beat, but The Dylan is arguably the more beautiful place to actually sit still in, precisely because it isn't trying to be a palace.

“We had a wonderful stay, the staff were absolutely exceptional, very polite and very helpful”

Location was excellent, the staff were exceptional. Attention to detail was very good from the staff. The hotel was comfortable and clean

I felt the room was disappointing, as we paid a huge amount for a suit, I was slightly disappointed by the room we received. In the spa there was no access to cold water!! Everything in the hotel was very expensive.

“Amazing experience”

I don't like to write reviews but wanted to make an exception to talk about our stay at The Dylan. Everything was just right, from the location, the rooms - we staid in two recently renovated rooms which were perfect and incredibly quiet-, the restaurant - we had dinner, breakfast and lunch at their brasserie-, to every single interaction with the staff who went out of their way to give us the best experience possibl
