The honest take
Book the Andaz unless you specifically want a pool and the grandest possible address. At $536 versus $1,403 for the Waldorf, the Andaz is the sharper booking on any rational measure, and its 9.4 rating across 1,304 reviews says the experience holds up at scale. The Waldorf's case rests on six stitched-together 17th-century canal palaces and a Guerlain spa with an indoor pool, which the Andaz cannot match. If that specific luxury matters to you, pay for it; if not, save the difference.
The look and the feel
Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam
Six monumental 17th-century merchant houses knocked through into one hotel, so the bones are real Golden Age Amsterdam: stone stoops, high sash windows, a discreet inner courtyard garden. The public rooms lean grand-hotel classic rather than radical, with Peacock Alley and the Vault Bar doing a hushed, formal version of luxury, all restrained gilt and dark wood against the canal light off the Herengracht. It reads as old-money Amsterdam, the kind of place ambassadors and private bankers already know.
Guests who want the most traditional, palatial version of a canal-house stay, with a spa pool and old-school formal service.
Andaz Amsterdam, Prinsengracht
The Andaz occupies a former public library on the Prinsengracht, and Marcel Wanders was let loose on the interiors, so it is anything but restrained: giant chandeliers, bold pattern-on-pattern, a reading room lobby with a huge Delft-blue-inspired mural and oversized furniture. Bathrooms are open-plan into the bedrooms, the garden looks onto the canal, and Bluespoon runs on produce from that same garden. It is playful, theatrical, unmistakably Amsterdam but with a wink, and it draws a design-literate, slightly younger crowd than the traditional five-star set.
Guests who want striking, characterful design and a great location for a fraction of the price, and don't need a pool.
The Andaz gives up the indoor swimming pool that comes with the Waldorf's Guerlain spa; everything else on the facility lists lines up.
The Andaz is the more interesting room to stand in: Marcel Wanders' interiors have genuine wit and colour where the Waldorf's restored palaces, however grand, play it safe and formal.

“We had a wonderful stay, the staff were absolutely exceptional, very polite and very helpful”
Location was excellent, the staff were exceptional. Attention to detail was very good from the staff.
The hotel was comfortable and clean
I felt the room was disappointing, as we paid a huge amount for a suit, I was slightly disappointed by the room we received.
In the spa there was no access to cold water!!
Everything in the hotel was very expensive.

“Fun and funky and full of charm in the quiet heart of the city”
We loved almost everything about our stay at the Andaz. It is located on a pretty canal in a quiet neighborhood, but restaurants are close by and it is with walking distance of the entire city. The staff is lovely, beds comfortable, breakfast so good and it has fun art everywhere. I only took one star away because of the room layout. I’m ok with the sinks in the main area, but it was hard with a stand alone shower. W
