The honest take

At $468 versus $1,412 a night, Mr. Jordaan is the sane choice for anyone who wants central Amsterdam and a good bed without paying for a spa they'll use once. The Waldorf Astoria is the only one of the two with a pool, spa, gym, parking, breakfast and bar included in the listing, and its 340 reviews at 9.8 suggest the service matches the price. Mr. Jordaan pulls 9.4 from 1,392 reviews, which is a strong hit rate for a simple three-star in a good spot. Book the Waldorf for the occasion; book Mr. Jordaan for the trip.

The look and the feel

Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam

Six joined 17th-century canal houses on the Herengracht, in the Golden Bend, is not a hotel shell so much as a small annexed street of Amsterdam's merchant history. Expect the bones of the period kept honest, high sash windows looking onto canal water and the courtyard garden, ceiling heights that only patrician houses had, and interiors laid over the top in a plush, tapestried, brass-fitted register that reads more European grand hotel than Dutch austerity. Peacock Alley and the Vault Bar suggest the kind of formal, dressed public rooms where staff know your room number, and the Guerlain spa with its indoor pool is a genuinely rare thing to find behind a gabled Golden Age facade. It draws guests marking something, or simply guests for whom the address itself is the point.

Guests who want a grand occasion, formal service and a canal-house palace with a spa and pool to match.

Mr. Jordaan

Bloemgracht puts this one in the Jordaan proper, one of Amsterdam's prettiest and quietest canal-side neighbourhoods, a few narrow streets of gabled houses and bicycles rather than grand mercantile grandeur. The listing describes cosy, modern-comfort rooms rather than a design statement, and at three stars with no bar, spa or restaurant on the facility list, this is a hotel built around the room and the location, not the public spaces. It suits the kind of traveller happy to have breakfast out on the street and spend the evening in a brown bar rather than the hotel lobby.

Guests who want a clean, well-run base in a beautiful, quiet part of the city and would rather spend the difference on the city itself.

Mr. Jordaan has no spa, pool, gym, parking, breakfast or bar on its facility list, all of which the Waldorf includes, so guests there sightsee and eat out rather than staying in.

The Waldorf is the more beautiful building by a wide margin, six merged Golden Age canal palaces with a spa and pool tucked inside is not a thing you find twice, but beauty here costs roughly three Mr. Jordaan nights.

“We had a wonderful stay, the staff were absolutely exceptional, very polite and very helpful”

Location was excellent, the staff were exceptional. Attention to detail was very good from the staff. The hotel was comfortable and clean

I felt the room was disappointing, as we paid a huge amount for a suit, I was slightly disappointed by the room we received. In the spa there was no access to cold water!! Everything in the hotel was very expensive.
