The honest take

Palace Hotel Tokyo is cheaper at $1,383 against $1,481, rated higher by guests (9.6 vs 9.4) with far more reviews behind that score, and adds parking to the mix. The Peninsula counters with a spa, indoor pool and sauna, none of which appear on Palace's list. For most visitors the moat-side calm and seven restaurants at Palace Hotel Tokyo make it the better booking; choose the Peninsula if a proper spa and pool are non-negotiable.

The look and the feel

The Peninsula Tokyo

The Peninsula Tokyo sits in Yurakucho facing the Imperial Palace grounds, a modern tower built in 2007 with the brand's usual formula of restrained cream stone, dark wood panelling and brass fittings in the lobby. The rooms lean toward warm neutrals and bedside touch panels, the kind of gadgetry Peninsula properties are known for. Heifenterrasu, the Cantonese restaurant, and the rooftop-adjacent spa and pool give it a resort-like thickness within the tower. It draws an international five-star crowd who want the reassurance of a known name and full wellness facilities in central Tokyo.

Guests who want a full spa, indoor pool and the Peninsula name's international consistency.

Palace Hotel Tokyo

Palace Hotel Tokyo occupies the site directly opposite the Imperial Palace moat in Marunouchi, rebuilt in 2012 with interiors that use a lot of warm wood, washi-inspired screens and quiet Japanese motifs against a fundamentally corporate glass tower. Seven restaurants spread through the building give it real range, from sushi counters to French dining, and the lobby lounge looks straight out over the palace gardens' green. It suits guests who want the Marunouchi business district's polish and a view over the moat rather than a resort spa experience.

Guests who want a higher-rated stay, moat views and a wide choice of restaurants in the Marunouchi district.

Booking Palace Hotel Tokyo over the Peninsula means giving up the spa, indoor pool and sauna, since none of these appear on its facility list.

Palace Hotel Tokyo has the more striking setting, its lounge and upper floors looking directly across the Imperial Palace moat, a view the Peninsula's more enclosed Yurakucho tower cannot match.

Great hotel

Walkable - friendly, superb.

8/10

I stayed at The Peninsula Tokyo twice about 10 years ago, and this was my third visit. The location is still unbeatable, but the hotel feels a bit tired now. Service was fine but unremarkable, overall the hotel lacked a distinctive character that sets it apart from other luxury options in Tokyo.
