The honest take

Both sit in the same Otemachi block and score identically at 9.4, so this comes down to what kind of five-star you want. The Four Seasons is £68 cheaper a night and has the full wellness stack: spa, indoor pool, fitness centre, hot tub and parking, none of which HOSHINOYA offers. HOSHINOYA charges more but is built around its own onsen and a completely different sense of space. If you want conventional five-star infrastructure, book the Four Seasons; if you want the more singular architectural experience, pay the difference for HOSHINOYA.

The look and the feel

Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi

The Four Seasons Otemachi occupies a modern tower with the calm, controlled polish the brand is known for worldwide: quiet corridors, garden-view rooms for those who book them, a lobby pitched toward hushed efficiency rather than drama. Materials run to pale stone, dark wood panelling and soft indirect light, the kind of interior designed to disappear rather than announce itself. The restaurant and bar operate at the reliable, slightly corporate register you'd expect from a global chain doing Tokyo well rather than doing something distinctly Tokyo. It draws business travellers, expense-account stays and anyone who wants five-star consistency without surprises.

Best for guests who want dependable, familiar five-star service and full wellness facilities including pool and spa.

HOSHINOYA Tokyo

HOSHINOYA Tokyo is the more architecturally singular building here: a tower wrapped in a lattice screen, its 84 rooms arranged around a central void, with tatami-lined floors, low furniture and washi paper details that pull from ryokan tradition rather than international hotel convention. The signature move is the rooftop onsen, hot spring water piped into the city centre, wood-decked and open to the sky, which nothing in the neighbouring high-rises can offer. Public spaces favour wood, stone and quiet ceremony over marble and brass, and the effect is closer to a mountain retreat dropped into a financial district. It suits travellers who want Tokyo's contemporary luxury filtered through a specifically Japanese sense of ritual and material.

Best for guests drawn to a distinct Japanese design concept and a rooftop onsen experience unavailable elsewhere nearby.

Choosing the Four Seasons over HOSHINOYA means giving up the onsen and the ryokan-inspired architecture that makes HOSHINOYA distinct, though the fee is modest for a hotel with fewer wellness facilities overall; choosing HOSHINOYA means going without a spa, indoor pool, separate fitness centre, hot tub and on-site parking.

HOSHINOYA is the more beautiful and characterful place to be, its lattice tower and rooftop onsen offering a genuinely site-specific experience the Four Seasons, for all its polish, does not attempt to match.

“A Disappointing Stay That Made Us Reconsider Four Seasons”

Polished Courtesy, but Inconsistent Hospitality Our family stayed at Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi for seven nights. We booked a suite for ourselves and a separate room for my mother, so this was a substantial family stay and gave us enough time to experience the hotel well beyond a brief first impression. Unfortunately, our experience was deeply mixed. While the staff were consistently polite on the surface,

“Vacation”

We had a wonderful stay at Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi. What stood out to me the most was the level of care and support from the hotel team. They went out of their way to help me with an important situation during my trip and continued assisting me even after I had already left Japan. I especially appreciate the time and effort the team put into helping me resolve everything. They certainly did not have to

“Best four seasons? Maybe.”

Such a great hotel. Wish I was there longer. Great room greeted amazing service. Can’t say enough about this hotel.

“Disappointed. Booked 6 months in advance, family split over floors, and poorly managed throughout.”

The architecture is beautiful, and that is where the positives end. We booked this hotel more than six months in advance, yet on arrival our family was split across two different floors. In a hotel built around the idea of shared communal spaces on each floor, that matters. It immediately took away the ability for us to enjoy the stay together as a family in the way the hotel’s own concept is meant to work. What mad

“Japanese immersion!”

If you want to be fully immersed on arrival in a Japanese experience this is the right place. Full on Japanese…. Which we enjoyed. Great location in quiet area. Western breakfast a bonus. We went half board which for 3 nights was too much Japenese food so would suggest dinner 1 night and then head out the other nights. 1 dinner is enough as they do repeat the menu which would be a criticism but overall a super place

“Beautiful hotel, but serious issues with unexpected charges and communication”

I recently stayed at HOSHINOYA Tokyo and unfortunately my experience ended up being very disappointing. The property itself is beautiful, but two situations during my stay left a very bad impression. I checked in on Wednesday at 3:30 pm, briefly dropped my luggage in the room, and went out to explore the city. When I returned later that evening (around 8:00 pm), staff told me there was damage to a bamboo window pane
