The honest take

Both hold 9.4 with strong review counts, but Shangri-La Tokyo comes in at $1,199 against the Four Seasons' $2,020 for the same night, and it adds pet allowance and breakfast that the Four Seasons doesn't list. Book the Four Seasons if you want the newer, more architecturally composed building and don't mind paying for it; book the Shangri-La if you want comparable luxury, a pool, spa and Imperial Palace views for far less. Both sit in Chiyoda-ku, a ten-minute walk apart, so location is essentially a wash.

The look and the feel

Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi

Four Seasons Otemachi opened in 2020 inside a Pelli Clarke & Partners tower, and it reads as considered rather than ornate: pale stone, low light, a lobby that keeps its voice down. Rooms lean toward calm neutrals and deep tubs, with some looking onto a rare rooftop garden rather than a wall of glass. The crowd is business travellers and quiet money, the kind who want excellent service and no drama in the decor.

Guests who want architectural restraint, a rooftop garden outlook and the particular hush of a purpose-built modern tower.

Shangri-La Tokyo

Shangri-La Tokyo occupies the upper floors of Marunouchi Trust Tower, right beside Tokyo Station, and trades on its view as much as its interiors, with rooms looking toward the Imperial Palace grounds, the Sky Tree, and on clear days Fuji. The public spaces use the brand's usual formula of warm woods, silk-toned upholstery and Chinese-inflected decorative touches rather than a strict Japanese minimalism. The Horizon Club lounge and the 20-metre pool give it a resort-like layer that the more austere Four Seasons doesn't lean into as hard.

Guests who want a big skyline view, pool and spa, and station-side convenience, without paying Four Seasons prices.

At $1,199 the Shangri-La already includes pet allowance and breakfast that the pricier Four Seasons doesn't list, so here the cheaper hotel isn't giving anything up on paper — the extra $821 at the Four Seasons buys a newer building and a more restrained design language, not more facilities.

The Four Seasons is the more quietly beautiful building, all considered stone and hush, while the Shangri-La sells itself on the view through the glass rather than the room around you.

“A Disappointing Stay That Made Us Reconsider Four Seasons”

Polished Courtesy, but Inconsistent Hospitality Our family stayed at Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi for seven nights. We booked a suite for ourselves and a separate room for my mother, so this was a substantial family stay and gave us enough time to experience the hotel well beyond a brief first impression. Unfortunately, our experience was deeply mixed. While the staff were consistently polite on the surface,

“Vacation”

We had a wonderful stay at Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi. What stood out to me the most was the level of care and support from the hotel team. They went out of their way to help me with an important situation during my trip and continued assisting me even after I had already left Japan. I especially appreciate the time and effort the team put into helping me resolve everything. They certainly did not have to
