The honest take
Both sit in Otemachi/Marunouchi within a few minutes of each other and both score 9.4, but Shangri-La Tokyo comes in at $1,199 against HOSHINOYA's $2,162 and includes a pool, spa, fitness centre, parking and hot tub that HOSHINOYA doesn't list. Book Shangri-La if you want conventional five-star scale and those facilities for nearly half the price. Book HOSHINOYA if what you actually want is the ryokan concept itself, since that's not something Shangri-La offers at any price.
The look and the feel
HOSHINOYA Tokyo
HOSHINOYA Tokyo is a modern ryokan stacked eighteen storeys into a black-latticed tower in Otemachi, designed by Rie Azuma with interiors that translate Japanese domestic ritual into a vertical hotel: tatami floors, shoji-like screens, a communal onsen bath filled with natural hot spring water trucked in and fed up through the building, kimono-clad staff who kneel to greet you, and an entrance you reach only after removing your shoes at a genkan. The 84 rooms are quiet and low-lit, furnished in washi paper, cedar and rush matting rather than the glass-and-marble default of the international five-star. It draws guests who want the ryokan experience without leaving the financial district, and who don't mind paying heavily for that novelty.
Travellers who want an immersive, design-led ryokan experience in central Tokyo and are willing to pay a premium for it.
Shangri-La Tokyo
Shangri-La Tokyo occupies the upper floors of the Marunouchi Trust Tower, directly above Tokyo Station, and plays the more familiar high-rise luxury hand: floor-to-ceiling windows looking toward the Imperial Palace and, on clear days, Fuji, a Horizon Club lounge, a 20-metre indoor pool and the group's signature CHI spa. The public rooms lean toward warm woods, silk and Asian antiques rather than minimalist glass, but the overall grammar is international five-star rather than distinctly Japanese. It suits business travellers and anyone wanting full facilities, easy rail and airport connections, and a big, well-staffed hotel rather than a concept.
Business travellers and anyone wanting a full-facility five-star with a pool, spa and gym at a comparatively lower rate.
HOSHINOYA's higher price buys the onsen concept and the ryokan design language, but it lists none of the pool, spa, fitness centre, parking or hot tub that come standard at Shangri-La, so guests give up conventional resort infrastructure for the sake of the concept.
HOSHINOYA is the more distinctive and beautiful place to actually be in, because it commits fully to a design idea, tatami, hot spring, cedar and quiet, rather than assembling the usual five-star components well, which is what Shangri-La does.

unexpected charges and poor communication
Shangri-La Tokyo
excellent, attentive service from staff
clean rooms and property
convenient location to both airports
housekeeping knocking too early

“Amazing service all around.”
Shangri-La guests come away happier, as reviews consistently praise attentive service and cleanliness with only minor gripes, while HOSHINOYA guests repeatedly report unresolved logistical and billing problems despite admiring the design.

“Disappointed. Booked 6 months in advance, family split over floors, and poorly managed throughout.”
The architecture is beautiful, and that is where the positives end.
We booked this hotel more than six months in advance, yet on arrival our family was split across two different floors. In a hotel built around the idea of shared communal spaces on each floor, that matters. It immediately took away the ability for us to enjoy the stay together as a family in the way the hotel’s own concept is meant to work. What mad

“Japanese immersion!”
If you want to be fully immersed on arrival in a Japanese experience this is the right place. Full on Japanese…. Which we enjoyed. Great location in quiet area. Western breakfast a bonus. We went half board which for 3 nights was too much Japenese food so would suggest dinner 1 night and then head out the other nights. 1 dinner is enough as they do repeat the menu which would be a criticism but overall a super place

“Beautiful hotel, but serious issues with unexpected charges and communication”
I recently stayed at HOSHINOYA Tokyo and unfortunately my experience ended up being very disappointing.
The property itself is beautiful, but two situations during my stay left a very bad impression. I checked in on Wednesday at 3:30 pm, briefly dropped my luggage in the room, and went out to explore the city. When I returned later that evening (around 8:00 pm), staff told me there was damage to a bamboo window pane
Amazing service all around.
Misaki Ohno was always so delightful and helpful with everything.
Beautiful property, convenient location to get around and to and from both airports.
Service with a smile. Everyone aims to please and exceed expectations. Can’t wait to stay here again!
