The honest take

Book The Maybourne Beverly Hills. It runs $1,050 against the Four Seasons' $1,019, a difference of $31, and comes with a rooftop pool and the higher guest rating, 9.6 against 9.2, despite fewer reviews. Both sit in Beverly Hills within a kilometre of each other, so location is not the deciding factor. The Four Seasons offers nothing on the list that the Maybourne lacks, so the trade-off runs the other way.

The look and the feel

The Maybourne Beverly Hills

The Maybourne occupies the old Regent Beverly Wilshire annex site turned boutique landmark, remodelled with a cleaner, more European hand than the old-school Beverly Hills grand hotels around it. Expect pale stone, brass fittings, and a rooftop pool deck that looks over the low rooflines toward the hills, the kind of space designed for daytime lounging as much as dinner. The Terrace restaurant faces Beverly Canon Gardens, a small green square that softens the otherwise commercial stretch of Canon Drive. The crowd is industry and finance money that wants discretion over spectacle, and the Maybourne Bar in the evening draws a quieter, dressier set than the tourist hotels nearby.

Right for guests who want a rooftop pool, a quieter square outside, and a more contemporary, design-forward take on Beverly Hills luxury.

Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills

The Four Seasons at Doheny is the traditional Beverly Hills grand hotel formula: French doors onto private balconies, heavy drapery, a formality that has stayed largely unchanged through recent renovations. The outdoor pool and cabana area is a longstanding fixture for industry meetings conducted poolside, and the lobby runs to marble and warm lighting rather than anything minimalist. It sits a few streets over on Doheny, closer to the Sunset Strip side of the neighbourhood, giving it a slightly different, busier immediate surroundings than the Maybourne's quieter Canon Drive block. This is the hotel people mean when they picture old Hollywood doing business by the pool.

Right for guests who want the classic grand-hotel format, private balconies, and poolside meetings in a slightly more central Beverly Hills location.

Nothing on the facility list separates them since the Four Seasons lacks none of what the Maybourne offers, but the Maybourne has a rooftop pool the Four Seasons doesn't, so the near-identical price makes the Maybourne the fuller package.

The Maybourne is the more beautiful place to actually be, since its rooftop pool and garden-facing terrace give it an outdoor life the Four Seasons' ground-level pool and heavier interiors don't quite match.

“Amazing 3 night stay!”

Had the most incredible 3 night stay!! Booked balcony deluxe room and had requested to face back of hotel/high floor since we are light sleepers. Sam in in-house reservations was amazing and our room on 15th floor was the most quiet room ever!! Everyone at hotel super friendly and everything very clean, beautiful decor. We especially loved The Penalty box to watch Cup games. Breakfast and room service also great. Co

“Four Seasons…always a good Choice”

The Four Seasons Hotel on Doheny Drive is a truly wonderful hotel from which to explore beautiful Beverly Hills. The hotel is very well-maintained, the reception staff was friendly, and our Hollywood Suite was spacious and cozy. Since we were staying on the ninth floor, we were able to make wonderful use of the two balconies. On the fourth floor is the pool area, which is spacious for an LA city hotel. A pretty poo

“Old timey Luxury, soon should get a little facelift.”

Long (10 day) business stay at the Four Seasons. Atmosphere: luxurious, yet understated. Harkens back to the early 2000 and one can easily understand why many celebrities opt to stay here, away from prying eyes. The lobby could use a bit of a refresher. Service: top notch, especially Tom the bellman and housekeeping. Check in desk was courteous but nothing extraordinary. Location: decent, but action is at least a 20
