The honest take

Book Hotel Bel-Air if the point of the trip is the hotel itself: it rates higher, at $1,408 a night it costs more, but Stone Canyon Road is its own world and the guest scores back that up. Book Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills if you want a genuine five-star base at $883 a night with a hot tub and a Wilshire Boulevard address close to the museums. Both are 5-star and highly rated; the difference is atmosphere and price, not competence.

The look and the feel

Hotel Bel-Air

Hotel Bel-Air sits in a canyon off Sunset, all bougainvillea-draped bungalows and pink stucco walls from the 1940s, with a swan pond that has been a fixture since opening day. The Bar & Lounge runs on a fireplace, a grand piano and garden views rather than spectacle, and the whole property reads as old Hollywood discretion: low buildings, dense planting, no glass tower announcing itself. Rooms lean toward white bedding and spa-style bathrooms, with the garden doing most of the talking through large windows. It draws people who want privacy and are willing to pay for the absence of a lobby scene.

Bel-Air suits couples and anyone chasing seclusion and old-Hollywood atmosphere who doesn't mind paying for it.

Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills

Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills is a vertical, glass-and-stone tower on Wilshire, closer to the Beverly Hills grid than to canyon seclusion, with balconies on some rooms looking out over the city rather than in on a garden. The public spaces run to polished, contemporary Waldorf styling: restaurant, bar, terrace, hot tub, free bike rentals for guests who want to actually move around the neighbourhood. It's the more urban, more amenity-forward of the two, built for people who want a landmark address near LACMA and the Petersen without giving up five-star service.

The Waldorf suits travellers who want a central Beverly Hills base, city views, and amenities like the hot tub and bike rentals at a lower nightly rate.

At $883 versus $1,408, the Waldorf's guests give up the swan-pond seclusion and marginally higher guest rating of Bel-Air, but on the facility list itself Waldorf actually adds a hot tub that Bel-Air lacks.

Bel-Air is the more beautiful place to simply be, on the strength of its 1940s canyon setting, gardens and piano bar, over the Waldorf's competent but more generic tower design.

“What a lovely hotel with gracious staff and fantastic breakfast!”

Waldorf Astoria guests seem happier overall, repeatedly singling out named staff members for exceptional, personal service, whereas Bel-Air praise is more about ambience with a minor gripe about the gym.

“Amazing stay and easily one of the best hotels we’ve been to.”

As expected, this was probably one of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed in. The look and feel of the hotel is an experience in itself, and the whole place feels incredibly calm, luxurious, and well thought through. It’s also in a great location for spending a few days in LA. We were upgraded to a much bigger room for our stay, which made it feel even more special. The room was super comfortable, spacious, spotless, an

“unique charm woven into every design detail”

We stayed here in March 2023, and this hotel is a classic Waldorf Astoria property with unique charm woven into every design detail. We stayed in a corner suite, and the hotel thoughtfully welcomed us with chocolate-covered strawberries. Their shuttle service made dining and shopping around Beverly Hills super convenient. We truly loved every moment of our stay!
