The honest take

Book Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam. At $342 a night against $699 for the Dylan, it is half the price, has more than eight times the reviews at a 9/10 rating, and offers a spa, indoor pool, and bar that the Dylan's listing doesn't mention having. The Dylan is smaller and more intimate, which has its own appeal, but on the data alone the Grand is doing more for less.

The look and the feel

The Dylan Amsterdam

The Dylan occupies a row of seventeenth-century canal houses on the Keizersgracht, one of Amsterdam's grandest waterways, and the interiors were shaped by designer Anouska Hempel in the late 1990s, all dark lacquer, orchids, and theatrical black-and-white contrasts. It's a small hotel, only 41 rooms, each individually decorated, which gives it the feel of a private townhouse rather than an institution. Vinkeles, the restaurant, sits in a converted bakery with beamed ceilings and candlelight, serving French cuisine to a quieter, moneyed crowd who want discretion over spectacle.

Guests who want a small, design-led townhouse hotel with a strong sense of intimacy and theatre over amenity breadth.

Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam

The Grand occupies the former City Hall and Admiralty of Amsterdam, a fifteenth-century building on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal in the old centre, with a facade and courtyard that carry centuries of civic history. Sofitel's contemporary French design sits inside that historic shell, so you get high corniced ceilings and leaded windows alongside crisp modern furnishings and butler service in the suites. There's a garden courtyard, a proper spa with an indoor pool, sauna and hammam, and Bridges restaurant for seafood, giving it a scale and range of amenity the Dylan doesn't attempt. It draws a broader five-star crowd, business and leisure both, drawn to the mix of monument and modern comfort.

Guests who want a full-service five-star hotel with spa, pool and historic grandeur, at a considerably lower price.

At $699, the Dylan is more than double the Grand's rate and, on the facility lists, gives you no spa, no pool, and no bar to match what the Grand offers, so you're paying a premium for intimacy and design pedigree rather than for amenities.

The Grand is the more beautiful place to actually be in: a fifteenth-century civic building with genuine architectural weight, a courtyard garden, and a spa, whereas the Dylan trades on stylish smallness rather than grandeur.

“Amazing experience”

I don't like to write reviews but wanted to make an exception to talk about our stay at The Dylan. Everything was just right, from the location, the rooms - we staid in two recently renovated rooms which were perfect and incredibly quiet-, the restaurant - we had dinner, breakfast and lunch at their brasserie-, to every single interaction with the staff who went out of their way to give us the best experience possibl

“Wonderful relaxing stay with great service”

Excellent location. Spacious room

The second bathroom was so big they could have put a shower in it instead of just a toilet. Also the basin the second bathroom was extremely tiny

“Except for Diego the disagreable waiter the rest was excellent”

I like the location the building the special amability of nearly all the staff and the restaurants

The bathroom having the toilette with no place to wash your hands and having to cross the shower to do so or step outside and enter again, and the step to go to the toilet for me is dangerous. A special mention of one waiter in the breakfast we had on the first morning. My husband was asking for his coffee with hot mi
