The honest take

The Okura is the better booking for most people: $393 against $699, a 9.2 rating from 210 reviews, and a spa, pool and bars the Dylan simply doesn't have. The Dylan wins on romance and address, a 41-room townhouse conversion on the Keizersgracht, but at nearly double the price with no rating data to back it. If you want facilities and a proven guest record, book Okura; if you want a quiet, design-led hideaway for a night or two, pay for the Dylan.

The look and the feel

The Dylan Amsterdam

The Dylan occupies a row of 17th-century canal houses on the Keizersgracht, reworked in the 1990s with a since-refreshed interior that leans dark and theatrical: deep colour, velvet, low lighting, a sense of rooms rather than corridors. Only 41 guestrooms, each individually decorated, so nothing about it feels like a chain hotel; it feels like staying in someone's very well-funded house. Vinkeles, the restaurant, sits in an old bakery at the back with vaulted brick ceilings and does serious French cooking. The crowd is quiet-moneyed, here for the address and the discretion rather than the amenities.

Couples and design-minded travellers who want a small, atmospheric canal-house hotel and don't need a spa or pool.

Hotel Okura Amsterdam

The Okura is a tower on the Amstel, built in the 1970s in a Japanese-run, internationally styled mould: marble lobbies, brass fittings, a sense of scale and polish rather than intimacy. Ciel Bleu, up on the 23rd floor, gives you Amsterdam laid out beneath glass. The public rooms are large, formal, built for business travellers and events as much as leisure guests, with a spa, indoor pool and multiple bars that the Dylan doesn't attempt. It's a hotel that runs like clockwork rather than one that seduces you at the door.

Business travellers, spa-seekers and anyone wanting more facilities and a strong track record at a lower nightly rate.

Booking the Dylan over the Okura means giving up the spa, the indoor pool and the extra bars entirely, along with the reassurance of a published guest rating.

The Dylan is the more beautiful place to actually sit and have a drink, a converted 17th-century house with real intimacy, against the Okura's efficient but impersonal tower polish.

“Amazing experience”

I don't like to write reviews but wanted to make an exception to talk about our stay at The Dylan. Everything was just right, from the location, the rooms - we staid in two recently renovated rooms which were perfect and incredibly quiet-, the restaurant - we had dinner, breakfast and lunch at their brasserie-, to every single interaction with the staff who went out of their way to give us the best experience possibl

“It was A M A Z I N G”

The service provided to us was extra ordinary. Started with warm welcome from Ashraf at the door to lovely check in by Aicha and Ezra. Were very attentive. Same for check out with Rochanie. Big thanks also to Roxana who prepared the room perfectly. If you seek feeling cared for and at home - this is the place to stay!

“Luxury service at the highest level”

Great care is given to all guests. When I arrived the front desk checked me in immediately and when I requested help with a dinner reservation pre-arrival they arranged a spot for me at the Yamazato Restaurant, a Michelin 1 star. While it was listed as full they double checked the waitlist and found a cancellation that evening. Amazing service, the 23rd floor bar staff was fabulous. The restaurant was top marks. W
