The honest take

Book the Beverly Hills Hotel if the point of the trip is the building itself: it rates higher, guests write more warmly about it despite fewer reviews, and at $1,434 a night you are paying for the bungalows and the Polo Lounge as much as the bed. Book the Waldorf Astoria if you want a very good five-star stay near LACMA for $883, with a hot tub, terrace and free bikes, and don't need the Sunset Boulevard mythology. Both sit in Beverly Hills-adjacent LA within 1.6km of each other, so location is a wash; the gap is history and price.

The look and the feel

The Beverly Hills Hotel

The Pink Palace, 1912, all Beverly Hills pink stucco and green-and-white banana-leaf wallpaper in the corridors, a colour scheme so iconic it has been copied badly for a century. The Polo Lounge still has its dark green leather booths and a clientele that includes people whose names you'd recognise from the poster on the wall, not just the guest list. The pool has underwater speakers and cabanas that cost more than most hotel rooms elsewhere; the Fountain Coffee Room is a 1950s soda-fountain counter that hasn't been allowed to modernise, on purpose. Bungalows out back are where the old Hollywood deals and affairs happened, and the hotel trades on that without needing to say much.

Right for people who want to feel the weight of Hollywood history and are happy to pay for a pink stucco icon rather than just a good room.

Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills

A newer build on Wilshire, glossier and calmer than its neighbour: flat-screen TVs, private balconies on some rooms, a terrace and hot tub that suggest a hotel designed for people who want quiet five-star comfort rather than a stage set. The public rooms read as contemporary luxury rather than period piece - clean lines, no inherited mythology, a restaurant and bar built for the current guest rather than referencing 1912. It's a hotel to work from or recover in, with free bikes for exploring rather than a bungalow to disappear into.

Right for travellers who want a genuinely excellent, calmer five-star base near the museums for meaningfully less money.

On the facility lists neither lacks anything the other has outright, so the Waldorf's savings come from scale and mythology rather than missing amenities - no Polo Lounge, no bungalows, no underwater pool music, just a very good contemporary hotel instead of a stage set.

The Beverly Hills Hotel is the more beautiful and characterful place to actually stand in, because ninety years of specific pink-and-green design decisions still work, and the Waldorf, however well run, is design without a story yet.

“Iconic hotel”

Iconic, gorgeous pool and rooms

Service was hit and miss, service with an attitude and when paying 2000 USD a night I would expect service to be outstanding, during breakfast often I was not greeted but said want coffee? and others were greeted etc, so do think service levels are equal to everyone

“Ticked off the list but don’t feel the draw to return”

Iconic building with unmatched history Staff were friendly

No coffee facility in the room!! Bath amenities are not plentiful or as high end as I would expect Bath water stopper didn’t work No signature scent to the hotel - surprising they haven’t considered that as a branding opportunity 45 minute delay to check in (past 3pm) with no goodwill offer other than a sorry…..

“unique charm woven into every design detail”

We stayed here in March 2023, and this hotel is a classic Waldorf Astoria property with unique charm woven into every design detail. We stayed in a corner suite, and the hotel thoughtfully welcomed us with chocolate-covered strawberries. Their shuttle service made dining and shopping around Beverly Hills super convenient. We truly loved every moment of our stay!
