The honest take

The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto is slightly cheaper at $1,591 versus $1,694, rated marginally higher at 9.4 against 9.2, and has a pool and hot tub that Suiran lacks. Suiran sits on the Arashiyama riverside with a private open-air bath and its own kaiseki-French restaurant, a genuinely different kind of stay from the Ritz's central Kamogawa location near Nijo Castle. Book the Ritz-Carlton for scale, amenities and ease of access; book Suiran for immersion in a garden and river setting away from the city centre.

The look and the feel

Suiran

Suiran occupies the former Arashiyama villa grounds along the Katsura river, and the design leans into that: low buildings, screened corridors, a landscaped Japanese garden that the rooms are arranged to look onto rather than compete with. Expect tatami-adjacent detailing, timber and paper screens rather than marble and gilt, and a restaurant serving kaiseki crossed with French technique. The private open-air baths in some rooms and the spa push the whole place toward quiet and slow mornings rather than lobby spectacle. It suits people who want Kyoto's old aesthetic vocabulary rather than an international five-star template.

Suiran suits travellers who want a secluded, traditionally-inflected Kyoto experience with a private bath and garden, and don't mind being out in Arashiyama.

The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto

Opened in 2014, the Ritz-Carlton Kyoto sits directly on the Kamogawa river with views toward the eastern hills, in a building that plays a more contemporary Japanese-luxury hand: clean lines, lacquer and stone in the public rooms, guestrooms with Nespresso machines, Blu-ray players and rain showers rather than traditional detailing. It reads as an international flagship hotel wearing Kyoto references lightly, with the subway and Nijo Castle a short walk off. The crowd is business travellers and higher-spend tourists who want polish and proximity over atmosphere.

The Ritz-Carlton suits travellers who want central access to sights and transit alongside a pool, hot tub and a more conventional international luxury package.

Suiran, at the higher price, has no listed pool or hot tub, which the Ritz-Carlton offers as standard amenities.

Suiran is the more characterful place to actually sit in, with its riverside garden and traditional materials doing quiet work the Ritz's contemporary polish doesn't attempt.

“Splurge worthy!”

Fabulous location in the Arashiyama area. Easy walk to Tenryu-ji Temple, Monkey park, River boats, Bamboo Forest and lively shopping area. Sitting directly on the river the hotel offered a nightly Happy Hour with veranda seating that included drinks and snacks that we thoroughly enjoyed. Very peaceful and relaxing in an area that is quite busy during the day. The outdoor gardens/area is very serene and beautiful. Fo

“An Unforgettable Family Stay and Breakfast at The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto”

We stayed one night at The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto using a free-night reward, as the first stop on a two-night, three-day family trip to Kyoto with our 1-year-2-month-old son. I'd previously visited only the lobby lounge along the Kamogawa River, so this was our first time actually staying as guests. What struck us first was how ready the room was for a baby: a crib and a Stokke high chair were already set up, along with

“wonderful stay”

A truly wonderful stay! It is clear that the hotel has very high standards, and everything was carried out with great care and attention. We were lucky to receive an upgrade to a fourth-floor room overlooking the Kamogawa River, and the view was absolutely beautiful. The service was just as impressive.
