The honest take

Park Hyatt Kyoto runs $1,708 a night against Mitsui's $1,148, a difference of $560 for a hotel that adds a hot tub and a bar to its own list. Mitsui counters with a rooftop and, more significantly, sits on the site of a historic gate and garden in Nijo, near the castle. Both are 5-star and both are excellent; the choice is really about Higashiyama's temple lanes versus central Nijo, and how much you want to pay for the extra soak and bar. Given the price gap and Mitsui's design pedigree, it's the better value stay of the two.

The look and the feel

Park Hyatt Kyoto

Park Hyatt Kyoto opened in 2019 in the wooded hills of Higashiyama, close to Kodaiji temple, and its design leans into that setting: low-slung timber and stone forms by Kengo Kuma-associated architects, deep eaves, and rooms angled toward the forest rather than the street. Interiors favour washi paper, kuro-tsuchi charcoal-black plaster, and lacquered wood, with the kind of hush that comes from thick walls and no traffic noise. The public spaces are restrained rather than grand: a small lobby, a garden view, a bar that leans quiet and whisky-heavy rather than loud. It draws a guest who wants proximity to temples and silence over central-city convenience.

Guests who want quiet, forest-adjacent seclusion within Kyoto and don't mind being a short taxi from the main sights.

HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO

Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto occupies the former site of the Kyoto residence of the Mitsui family, near Nijo Castle, and the hotel makes a point of incorporating an actual historic gate from that estate into its entrance sequence. The design mixes traditional Kyoto craft, wood lattice, stone, water, with a more layered hospitality programme, three restaurants including a French kitchen, a spa with hot spring baths, a 24-hour gym, and a rooftop. It sits centrally enough to walk to Nishiki Market, which makes it a hotel for people who want ryokan-inflected calm without giving up city access.

Guests who want central access to Nijo Castle and Nishiki Market alongside serious spa and dining facilities.

Booking Mitsui over the Hyatt means giving up the on-site hot tub and dedicated bar that Park Hyatt lists, though Mitsui's own spa and hot springs largely cover the soaking end of that gap.

Mitsui's incorporation of a genuine historic gate and its hot-spring bathing give it a layered sense of place that the newer, more minimalist Park Hyatt, handsome as it is, can't quite match.

“Leaving Japan on a high note!”

Park Hyatt is a great gem in the Gion district. Situated in a charming and picturesque area it was a wonderful stay for the last leg of our Japan visit. It is a bit farther from the main parts of Kyoto where restaurants were open later for dinner, but everything was a quick cab ride away. For lunch there are some great hidden restaurants to explore which were walkable from the hotel. There were also some great cultur

The rooms were wonderful and bed was very comfortable. The bar area is very scenic and the kiwi cocktail that was on special was one of the best I’ve had. We really enjoyed the option to reserve the onsen privately as well. Would love to return!
