The honest take

Both are five-star Kyoto properties roughly 4km apart, but they sell different Kyoto entirely. The Mitsui Kyoto runs $1,148 a night, sits by Nijō Castle with a private hot spring and three restaurants, and trades on its central address. Roku Kyoto is $934, rated 9.4 from 99 reviews, and sits against the Kinugasa hills near Kinkaku-ji with an outdoor pool and garden that the Mitsui doesn't have. Book the Mitsui for the historic gate and city convenience, Roku for the resort feel and the better guest scores at a lower price.

The look and the feel

HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO

The Mitsui incorporates part of the actual Kachoumon gate from the Nijō Aburanokouji imperial villa, and the whole property is built around that history, low buildings around a garden and reflecting pool, natural hot spring water piped in from Arashiyama. Interiors mix dark timber, washi-lined walls and stone in a modern idiom that nods at machiya proportions without pretending to be one. It reads formal, urban, a little hushed, aimed at guests who want walking distance to Nijō Castle and Nishiki Market and don't mind paying for it.

Right for guests who want a landmark building with real imperial-era fabric, an onsen, and Nijō Castle and Nishiki Market on foot.

ROKU KYOTO

Roku sits up against the wooded slopes of Kinugasa, close to Kinkaku-ji and Ryōan-ji, and leans into that setting rather than the city grid: an outdoor pool set against the hillside, a garden that runs into the treeline, rooms with balconies looking onto the mountain. The mood is quieter and greener than a downtown hotel, closer to a retreat than a city base, with a bar the Mitsui's listing doesn't mention and a stronger emphasis on views over heritage architecture.

Right for guests who want a resort atmosphere near the northern temples, a pool and garden, and don't mind being a taxi ride from central Kyoto.

At $934 Roku gives up the rooftop that the Mitsui has, and swaps a downtown, temple-and-market walking address for a hillside one near Kinkaku-ji instead.

The Mitsui is the more architecturally serious place, built literally around a surviving imperial gate, which makes it the better building to simply stand inside.

The rooms were wonderful and bed was very comfortable. The bar area is very scenic and the kiwi cocktail that was on special was one of the best I’ve had. We really enjoyed the option to reserve the onsen privately as well. Would love to return!

“A Bridge to Another Kind of Kyoto”

Although I have visited Japan on numerous occasions, this was my first time in Kyoto, and thus my first encounter with this particular property. It would perhaps be fair to say that the resort does not place itself in immediate dialogue with the city’s more frequented destinations. For those who may wish to explore Kyoto’s major sites at a more leisurely pace, the journey to and from the resort may require a certain

“Beautiful Hotel with Great Staffs”

Roku Kyoto Hotel gave us one of the best hotel-staying experience. The hotel itself is really beautiful, especially at night. Everyone is well trained and warm. We feel good about every moment at the hotel, from check-in process, to Tenjin (the onsite restaurant and bar), the hot spring pool and poolside sauna, the nearby Japanese garden that’s free for hotel guests, and concierge service that made reservations fo
