The honest take

Book Roku Kyoto if you want the more architecturally interesting stay for under half the price, at $876 against $1,658 a night, with guest ratings tied at 9.4. Book Four Seasons Kyoto if you want an indoor pool, whirlpools, saunas and steam rooms, plus pet allowance, none of which Roku offers. The two sit 7.2 km apart in different parts of the city, so pick based on which side of Kyoto you want to wake up in.

The look and the feel

Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto

Four Seasons Kyoto sits on the edge of a 800-year-old pond garden once part of Myohoin temple grounds, and the building leans into that inheritance with dark timber screens, stone paths and water visible from most public rooms. Interiors mix Western five-star convention, marble bathrooms, iPads, flat-screen TVs, with Japanese gestures like an on-site tea house and sushi counter. The spa level with its indoor pool and whirlpools reads more international-luxury-hotel than Kyoto ryokan, comfortable rather than atmospheric. It draws a guest who wants five-star infrastructure with a temple garden view attached.

Travellers who want indoor pool and full spa infrastructure alongside Higashiyama's temples and don't mind paying for it.

ROKU KYOTO

Roku Kyoto sits in Kinugasa near Kinkaku-ji, on the quieter northwest side of the city, and the listing points to mountain-view balconies and a garden setting rather than a walled temple pond. Rooms are described as elegantly designed with modern comforts, air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, private bathrooms, an outdoor pool and fitness centre rounding out the amenities. It reads as a newer LXR property built for calm and views rather than dense historic layering, with fewer reviews so far, 99 against 449, but the same 9.4 guest score. It suits travellers after quiet, hillside Kyoto rather than the temple-district center.

Travellers chasing mountain views and a calmer northwest Kyoto base at roughly half the nightly rate.

At $876 against $1,658, Roku gives up the indoor pool, whirlpools, saunas and steam rooms of the Four Seasons spa, and doesn't accommodate pets.

Four Seasons has the more storied setting, a temple pond garden with centuries behind it, which gives it the edge as a place to simply sit and look out.

“A Bridge to Another Kind of Kyoto”

Although I have visited Japan on numerous occasions, this was my first time in Kyoto, and thus my first encounter with this particular property. It would perhaps be fair to say that the resort does not place itself in immediate dialogue with the city’s more frequented destinations. For those who may wish to explore Kyoto’s major sites at a more leisurely pace, the journey to and from the resort may require a certain

“Beautiful Hotel with Great Staffs”

Roku Kyoto Hotel gave us one of the best hotel-staying experience. The hotel itself is really beautiful, especially at night. Everyone is well trained and warm. We feel good about every moment at the hotel, from check-in process, to Tenjin (the onsite restaurant and bar), the hot spring pool and poolside sauna, the nearby Japanese garden that’s free for hotel guests, and concierge service that made reservations fo
