Mitsui Kyoto is $1,148 a night, sits by Nijō Castle, and has its own hot spring and 24-hour health club, which is rare for a hotel this central. Suiran is $1,718, out in Arashiyama on the Hozu river, with a 9.2 rating from 172 reviews against Mitsui's smaller review base. If you want to walk to Nishiki Market and the castle district, book Mitsui; if you want gardens, river views and a higher-rated stay and don't mind the 7km trip out west, book Suiran.
HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO
The Mitsui occupies part of the former Kyoto residence of the Mitsui family, with a Momoyama-era gate moved onto the site, so the entrance itself is a piece of history before you reach the lobby. Inside it's contemporary Japanese minimalism built around that heritage core, dark timber, washi-textured walls, low horizontal lines, courtyards that bring in filtered light rather than direct sun. The hot spring bath and 24-hour gym under the same roof is unusual for a city-centre hotel and gives the place a slightly different rhythm, guests moving between kimono-clad breakfast rooms and modern spa facilities. It reads as a hotel for people who want traditional Kyoto materials without giving up modern comfort.
Travellers who want to walk out the door into central Kyoto's temples, markets and shopping streets, with an onsen to come back to.
Suiran
Suiran sits directly on the Hozu river in Arashiyama, built around a Japanese garden that the hotel treats as the main event, with rooms and public spaces oriented to look out on maples, moss and water rather than street. The interiors mix Kyoto craft, tatami textures, low furniture, screens, with French-Japanese dining and a private open-air bath that leans into the riverside setting. It's quieter and more removed than a downtown hotel, closer to a country retreat, drawing guests who came to Kyoto for gardens and slow mornings rather than nightlife or shopping.
Travellers prioritising a garden and riverside setting over central location, willing to taxi into the city when they want it.
Mitsui lacks a rooftop that Suiran doesn't have; Suiran lacks a bar that Mitsui has, so an evening drink means going without or heading into town from Arashiyama.
Suiran is the more beautiful place to simply sit in, given the garden and river are built into every sightline, but Mitsui's Momoyama gate and hot spring make it the more interesting building to walk through.

The rooms were wonderful and bed was very comfortable. The bar area is very scenic and the kiwi cocktail that was on special was one of the best I’ve had. We really enjoyed the option to reserve the onsen privately as well. Would love to return!
