The honest take

Book Suiran if the Arashiyama riverside and a private open-air bath matter more than anything else, at $1,718 a night with a 9.2 rating from 172 guests. Book Six Senses Kyoto if you want Higashiyama's temple streets, an indoor pool and sauna, and to save roughly $700 a night, at $1,009 with a 9.0 from 102 guests. The two sit 9.5km apart in different parts of the city, so this is really a choice between Arashiyama and Higashiyama as a base. Suiran has no listed pool but does have parking, which Six Senses lacks.

The look and the feel

Suiran

Suiran occupies a restored ryokan-style property on the Katsura riverbank in Arashiyama, and it trades on that setting hard: a traditional Japanese garden, moss, maples, the sound of the river below the terrace. Kyo Suiran's dining room does kaiseki with French technique folded in, which fits the hotel's general project of softening Japanese formality with Western comfort rather than pure minimalism. Rooms lean toward tatami-adjacent japandi, wood screens, low furniture, private open-air baths in some categories. It draws couples and older travellers after quiet and a sense of being somewhere unmistakably Kyoto, away from the city grid.

Suiran suits couples or design-minded travellers who want a Japanese-garden ryokan atmosphere and are willing to pay for the riverside setting.

Six Senses Kyoto

Six Senses Kyoto sits in Higashiyama, the temple district, and the listing leans on wellness rather than garden theatre: an indoor pool, sauna, fitness centre, kids' club. Six Senses as a brand generally builds around natural materials, muted stone and timber, spa-forward programming, and a calmer, more clinical luxury than a classic Japanese inn — expect pale wood, soft lighting, an emphasis on sleep and treatment menus over ornament. The location puts you within walking distance of Kiyomizu-dera and the old lanes, useful for anyone wanting temples on foot rather than a garden retreat by a river.

Six Senses suits families or wellness-focused travellers who want an indoor pool, spa facilities and easy walking access to Higashiyama's temples.

At $1,009 against Suiran's $1,718, Six Senses gives up parking, and travelling between the two neighbourhoods without a car means relying on taxis or trains across that 9.5km gap.

Suiran is the more distinctive place to sit still in, since its riverside Japanese garden and open-air baths give it a specific sense of place that a wellness-hotel interior, however well built, doesn't quite match.

“Splurge worthy!”

Fabulous location in the Arashiyama area. Easy walk to Tenryu-ji Temple, Monkey park, River boats, Bamboo Forest and lively shopping area. Sitting directly on the river the hotel offered a nightly Happy Hour with veranda seating that included drinks and snacks that we thoroughly enjoyed. Very peaceful and relaxing in an area that is quite busy during the day. The outdoor gardens/area is very serene and beautiful. Fo
