The honest take

ROKU KYOTO comes in at $883 a night with a 9.4 guest rating from 99 reviews and has a pool, which Suiran lacks. Suiran costs $1,732, sits at 9.2 from 172 reviews, and is by the Katsura River in Arashiyama rather than Kinugasa near Kinkaku-ji, 6.7km away. For most people the case is straightforward: ROKU gives you a higher-rated stay with more facilities for half the money, unless the specific pull of Arashiyama's riverside setting and Suiran's private open-air baths matters more to you than the saving.

The look and the feel

Suiran

Suiran occupies the former Ogawa villa grounds along the Katsura River in Arashiyama, and the whole point of staying here is the garden and the water: rooms open onto private gardens or the river itself, some with their own open-air bath, so the sound of the current is often the only sound. The public spaces lean into shoin-style restraint, dark timber, tatami, low light, with Kyo Suiran's kaiseki-meets-French dining looking out over the greenery. It draws an older, quieter, often Western luxury-travel crowd who want Arashiyama's temples and bamboo groves at their doorstep rather than central Kyoto's density.

Suiran suits travellers who want the quiet, river-and-garden intimacy of Arashiyama and are willing to pay for private open-air baths and a smaller, older-villa atmosphere.

ROKU KYOTO

ROKU KYOTO sits in the northwest near Kinkaku-ji and Ryoan-ji, in Kinugasa, a residential district edged by hills rather than river. The listing points to an outdoor pool, garden, and rooms with mountain-view balconies, air conditioning and flat-screen TVs, a newer build with a more contemporary, resort-like layout than Suiran's older villa grounds. It suits travellers who want a full-service modern hotel with a pool and fitness centre while still being a short trip from the temple circuit.

ROKU KYOTO suits travellers who want a modern full-facility resort with a pool near the Kinkaku-ji side of the city, at roughly half Suiran's rate.

ROKU KYOTO, the cheaper of the two, has no facility gap of its own since it's Suiran that lacks the pool ROKU offers; the real trade-off runs the other way, in that Suiran's higher price buys the Arashiyama riverside setting, private open-air baths and an older, more storied villa property that ROKU's newer build doesn't attempt to replicate.

Suiran is the more atmospheric place to actually sit still in, given the river frontage and garden intimacy of a converted villa, though ROKU's pool and mountain views make it the more comfortable modern stay.

“Splurge worthy!”

Fabulous location in the Arashiyama area. Easy walk to Tenryu-ji Temple, Monkey park, River boats, Bamboo Forest and lively shopping area. Sitting directly on the river the hotel offered a nightly Happy Hour with veranda seating that included drinks and snacks that we thoroughly enjoyed. Very peaceful and relaxing in an area that is quite busy during the day. The outdoor gardens/area is very serene and beautiful. Fo

“A Bridge to Another Kind of Kyoto”

Although I have visited Japan on numerous occasions, this was my first time in Kyoto, and thus my first encounter with this particular property. It would perhaps be fair to say that the resort does not place itself in immediate dialogue with the city’s more frequented destinations. For those who may wish to explore Kyoto’s major sites at a more leisurely pace, the journey to and from the resort may require a certain

Roku Kyoto Hotel gave us one of the best hotel-staying experience. The hotel itself is really beautiful, especially at night. Everyone is well trained and warm. We feel good about every moment at the hotel, from check-in process, to Tenjin (the onsite restaurant and bar), the hot spring pool and poolside sauna, the nearby Japanese garden that’s free for hotel guests, and concierge service that made reservations fo
