The honest take

Book the Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam. It is cheaper at $549 against $603, has more than triple the review base at a still-excellent 9.0, and occupies one of the city's most storied buildings, a former royal inn and city hall in the heart of the old centre. The InterContinental Amstel counters with a hot tub and a riverside health club, and its rating edges half a point higher, but for the price difference you are mostly paying for the Amstel's view and its wellness suite rather than a meaningfully better stay.

The look and the feel

InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam by IHG

The Amstel is Amsterdam's grande dame of the river, a neo-Renaissance pile from 1867 that has hosted the Rolling Stones and Dutch royalty in equal measure. Inside it runs to red carpet, gilt mirrors, chandeliers and a formal, slightly hushed hierarchy of staff in tailcoats. The rooms lean classic-with-updates, heavy curtains and warm wood against flat-screen TVs, and the health club below has an indoor pool that looks straight out onto the Amstel, a rare thing in this city. It draws an older, moneyed, discretion-loving crowd, the sort who take the weekend afternoon tea seriously.

Guests who want riverside water views, a proper health club with a pool, and the formality of an old-school grand hotel.

Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam

The Grand occupies a fifteenth-century convent turned admiralty turned city hall, and Sofitel's French design team layered contemporary furniture and cool grey-and-cream palettes over the original stone, leaded windows and a stained-glass stairwell without ironing out the building's age. There is a hidden garden and terrace, a Art Deco-tinged bar that gets a proper after-work crowd, and Bridges restaurant serving seafood under original ceiling beams. The Oudezijds Voorburgwal canal outside is one of the prettiest in the old centre, gabled houses and bicycles rather than the more sedate, leafy Amstel-side setting of its rival.

Guests who want to be inside a genuine slice of Amsterdam history, walkable to the canals and old centre, with French polish over medieval bones.

The Grand, despite being the cheaper of the two, has no hot tub, which the Amstel offers as part of its river-view health club; everything else is a difference of setting and history rather than facilities.

The Grand is the more beautiful place to actually stand in: a genuine medieval-to-Renaissance building with a stained-glass stairwell and centuries of civic history under a French design hand, against the Amstel's grander but more generic nineteenth-century luxury-hotel formula.

“Wonderful relaxing stay with great service”

Excellent location. Spacious room

The second bathroom was so big they could have put a shower in it instead of just a toilet. Also the basin the second bathroom was extremely tiny

“Except for Diego the disagreable waiter the rest was excellent”

I like the location the building the special amability of nearly all the staff and the restaurants

The bathroom having the toilette with no place to wash your hands and having to cross the shower to do so or step outside and enter again, and the step to go to the toilet for me is dangerous. A special mention of one waiter in the breakfast we had on the first morning. My husband was asking for his coffee with hot mi
