The honest take

Book the Surf Club if the budget allows it: at $1,404 a night it delivers a genuinely rarefied 1930s building, a 9.4 guest rating and a much smaller, calmer footprint. Book the Fontainebleau if you want Miami Beach at full volume for $359: six pools, nine restaurants, a nightclub and cabana culture, with a solid 8 out of 10 from over 4,000 reviews. They sit 6.6km apart on the same Collins Avenue, but they are not the same holiday. The Surf Club is the more beautiful building; the Fontainebleau is the bigger night out.

The look and the feel

Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club

The Surf Club was built in 1930 and the old clubhouse still anchors the property, restored rather than replaced, so the bones are genuinely pre-war: high ceilings, arched loggias, a sense of old Palm Beach transplanted onto Collins Avenue. The interiors lean into that history with custom furnishings and marble bathrooms rather than glass-and-chrome maximalism, and Le Sirenuse Miami brings an Amalfi Coast dining room onto an Atlantic beach, which sounds like a mismatch but reads as confident. The Champagne Bar is small and formal rather than a scene. Floor-to-ceiling windows put the ocean in every room instead of hiding it behind a resort deck.

Couples and travellers who want a small, design-led beachfront hotel with quiet formality and are prepared to pay for it.

Fontainebleau Miami Beach

The Fontainebleau is the 1954 Morris Lapidus building, the one with the sweeping curved facade and the famous 'stairway to nowhere' in the lobby, all bowtie marble floors and dramatic scale built for people to be seen arriving. It has been renovated and expanded many times since, and today the identity is less about that original glamour and more about sheer volume: six pools, private cabanas with butler service, a nightclub, nine restaurants. The public spaces are big, bright and busy rather than intimate, and the energy runs closer to a resort-meets-nightlife complex than a quiet retreat.

Groups, families and anyone who wants pools, restaurants and nightlife on tap without leaving the property.

At $359 the Fontainebleau gives up the Surf Club's hot tub and golf, along with the smaller scale and higher guest rating that come with a boutique 1930s property rather than a sprawling convention-scale resort.

The Surf Club is the more beautiful place to actually stand in, a restored 1930s clubhouse with real intimacy, while the Fontainebleau's Lapidus lobby is a landmark you photograph rather than linger in.

“Above & Beyond - We Can’t Wait to Return!”

Our stay at Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club exceeded every expectation and was truly one of the most memorable hotel experiences we’ve ever had. From the moment we arrived, every member of the team made us feel genuinely welcomed and cared for. The level of service was exceptional - not because it felt scripted, but because every interaction felt personal, thoughtful, and sincere. Whether we were at the pool, di

“Fantastic stay, resort, and service”

We had an outstanding stay at the Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club with our son. The service was excellent from start to finish — from the initial valet greeting all the way through departure and checkout. Even measured against the typically very high Four Seasons standards, the team here operates at the highest level. Everything felt smooth, attentive, and genuinely well-executed. The pool setup is terrific. We

“Only spot to stay in Miami with 5 star service”

This is our 2nd time at Surfside. We love the location as it is away from the fray of South Beach and has all the elegance and level of service one hopes at a Four Seasons. It is a beautiful hotel with gorgeous common areas. Multiple pools and spots to eat through out the day. If you plan to eat at the adjoining restaurant Surf Club make a reservation. They are not part of the Four Seasons in that you can expect a
