The honest take

The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort is the one to book, at $968 against $2,019 for the EDITION, with a 14,000 sq ft spa, Yabu Pushelberg interiors and a hot tub the EDITION doesn't list. The EDITION has the review numbers on its side, a 9 out of 10 over 664 reviews versus no published score for the St. Regis, and it wins on sheer spectacle with an ice rink, bowling alley and nightclub built into a hotel. But for the price gap, Bal Harbour gives you more room, more calm, and design pedigree that doesn't need a nightclub to prove itself.

The look and the feel

The Miami Beach EDITION

Ian Schrager and John Pawson gutted the old Seville Hotel and rebuilt it as a study in restraint with theatrics bolted on: white terrazzo, blackened steel, a lobby that reads as gallery rather than hotel until you notice the ice rink glowing through glass off to one side. It is Collins Avenue at its most self-aware, South Beach crowd, DJ-adjacent, the kind of place where the Matador Bar fills late with people who came for the room as much as the drink. Pawson's discipline keeps it from tipping into kitsch, but the whole building is built to be looked at.

People who want to be in the middle of South Beach's nightlife and don't mind paying for the theatre of it.

The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort

Bal Harbour is nine miles north and a different register entirely, low-rise, oceanfront, the kind of resort built for people who came to be still. Yabu Pushelberg's rooms lean warm and tailored rather than showy, and the 14,000 sq ft spa with its Finnish saunas and steam room is the actual centre of gravity here, not a bar or a dance floor. Atlantikós and the St Regis Bar with its live music and wine vault suggest an older, quieter idea of luxury, closer to Bal Harbour Shops than to the SoBe strip.

People who want an oceanfront resort built around a serious spa and quiet, and are happy to be well away from the strip.

Booking Bal Harbour over the EDITION means giving up the ice rink, bowling alley, nightclub and second outdoor pool, and trading a South Beach address for one nine miles north.

The EDITION is the more arresting building to walk into, Pawson's austerity playing against Schrager's showmanship, but Bal Harbour is the more beautiful place to actually stay, for the ocean, the space and the quiet Yabu Pushelberg gave the rooms.

“Perfection”

My very favorite hotel. This was my second stay and it was somehow better than my first stay. The accommodations are perfect, the staff is beyond helpful, and the food is incredible. The room- generally given a slight upgrade with Marriott status. They have the best pillows I've ever used. In fact, I bought a set for my home because I sleep like a baby whenever I stay at this hotel. The bed is also comfy- firm yet c
