The honest take

At nearly the same price, this comes down to neighbourhood and what you want the hotel to do for you. Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills, at $870, sits on Wilshire near LACMA and the Petersen, with a pet allowance, hot tub, bar and golf access the Ritz doesn't list, and a 9/10 guest score across 264 reviews. The Ritz-Carlton, at $854, is downtown in the LA Live complex, part of a 123-room tower with a rooftop and three restaurants, but no guest rating is given here and it has fewer reviews on record. Book the Waldorf for a classic Beverly Hills base with better-documented guest satisfaction; book the Ritz if you want to be downtown near Crypto.com Arena and want a rooftop.

The look and the feel

Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills

This is the old Beverly Wilshire annex reborn under the Waldorf Astoria flag, a Renaissance Revival landmark on Wilshire Boulevard with the kind of grand porte-cochère entrance that has been photographed since the 1920s. Interiors lean into old Hollywood formality: chandeliers, marble floors, dark wood panelling, gilt mirrors, the sort of lobby where people still dress for dinner. Rooms carry the same restrained glamour, some with private balconies looking over Beverly Hills rooftops. The crowd is old money and industry types who want discretion with polish rather than spectacle.

Right for those who want a storied, old-Hollywood base in Beverly Hills with quieter, more residential surroundings.

The Ritz-Carlton

Part of the LA Live development next to Crypto.com Arena, this Ritz-Carlton occupies the upper floors of a glass tower designed for scale rather than intimacy, all clean lines, dark stone and floor-to-ceiling glass with sweeping downtown views. The public spaces are contemporary and corporate-luxe: neutral palettes, backlit bars, a poolside deck that doubles as a see-and-be-seen spot on event nights. It draws a mix of business travellers, concertgoers and visitors passing through downtown rather than settling into a neighbourhood.

Right for those attending events at Crypto.com Arena or LA Live who want rooftop views and downtown energy at their door.

The Ritz-Carlton, slightly cheaper, does not list a hot tub, golf access, pet allowance or dedicated bar the way the Waldorf does, so it gives up some of that layered leisure offering for its downtown rooftop position.

The Waldorf Astoria is the more beautiful place to actually be in, trading the Ritz's glass-tower views for a genuine period building with the texture and formality that architecture like this still delivers.

“unique charm woven into every design detail”

We stayed here in March 2023, and this hotel is a classic Waldorf Astoria property with unique charm woven into every design detail. We stayed in a corner suite, and the hotel thoughtfully welcomed us with chocolate-covered strawberries. Their shuttle service made dining and shopping around Beverly Hills super convenient. We truly loved every moment of our stay!
