Book Hotel Bel-Air if you want a storied canyon retreat and can spend the extra $554 a night; it rates 9.6 from 157 reviews and has the pool, spa, gym, and a piano bar the Ritz lacks. Book The Ritz-Carlton if you want to be downtown near Crypto.com Arena and Peacock Theater at $854, with its own spa, pool, three restaurants and a rooftop the Bel-Air doesn't have. They're 17 kilometres apart and serve completely different trips, so let location decide first, budget second.
Hotel Bel-Air sits in Stone Canyon in Bel-Air proper, a low-slung Mission Revival property built in the 1940s, all pink stucco, bougainvillea and eleven acres of gardens with a resident flock of swans on the pond. The Bar & Lounge has a fireplace and a grand piano and looks out over the greenery, the kind of room where old Hollywood used to disappear for an afternoon. Rooms lean toward plush white bedding and garden views rather than skyline drama, and the whole place is built for privacy and quiet rather than foot traffic.
Hotel Bel-Air suits travellers wanting seclusion, gardens and old-money quiet, with money to spend on it.
The Ritz-Carlton on Olympic Boulevard is part of the L.A. Live complex downtown, a glass tower with 123 rooms, espresso makers and designer toiletries, sitting above three restaurants, a poolside bar and stylish lounges. It's a modern, high-rise version of luxury geared to convention and event traffic, with Crypto.com Arena and Peacock Theater a short walk away rather than a canyon view out the window.
The Ritz-Carlton suits travellers wanting downtown convenience for events, arenas and city dining at a lower nightly rate.
At $854 versus $1,408, The Ritz-Carlton gives up the pet-friendly policy, golf access and the piano bar/fireplace lounge that Bel-Air offers, trading them for a rooftop and a downtown address instead.
Hotel Bel-Air is the more beautiful place to actually be in, a low, garden-wrapped 1940s hideaway with swans and a fireplace bar, versus a well-run but fairly generic downtown tower.

“There was either food or vomit smeared into the cushion chairs around the jacuzzi.”
Bel-Air guests come away happier, praising a consistently calm, luxurious, spotless experience, while Ritz-Carlton reviews are mixed, with one guest reporting dirty rooms and disputed charges.

“Amazing stay and easily one of the best hotels we’ve been to.”
As expected, this was probably one of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed in. The look and feel of the hotel is an experience in itself, and the whole place feels incredibly calm, luxurious, and well thought through. It’s also in a great location for spending a few days in LA. We were upgraded to a much bigger room for our stay, which made it feel even more special. The room was super comfortable, spacious, spotless, an

“A Five Star Experience”
We spent a day and half at this hotel over Christmas and absolutely loved every minute. This location is modern and stylish and the staff are polished but also very warm. We enjoyed the Club Lounge and amenities. All were top notch. The staff are so kind and charming. Josh in the Lounge and Harrison at the Front Desk were among our favorites. We enjoyed the easy enclosed walk to the J.W. Lobby and the excellent
