The honest take
Book the Beverly Hills Hotel if you can stretch to $1,434 a night: it is one of the great hotel buildings in America and the price includes that history, plus a pool, bar, hot tub and golf access the Ritz-Carlton doesn't have. The Ritz-Carlton at L.A. Live is $854 and gives you a rooftop, a spa, three restaurants and a steam room, in a modern downtown tower with no comparable pedigree. They sit 14 km apart in very different Los Angeles neighbourhoods, so this is really a choice between old-money Beverly Hills and downtown convenience near the arena and theatre district.
The look and the feel
The Beverly Hills Hotel
The Beverly Hills Hotel is the pink stucco and green-striped-awning landmark on Sunset that has been photographed since the 1910s, with the banana-leaf wallpaper in the lobby corridors designed by Don Loper in the 1940s still doing the work of making everyone feel they've stepped into old Hollywood. The Polo Lounge is dark wood and pink booths and the kind of hush that comes from decades of studio deals being done over eggs. The pool has underwater music piped in and private cabanas lined up like beach huts, and the bungalows out back are where stars have always gone to disappear. It draws people who want the myth as much as the mattress.
People who want to stay inside a piece of Hollywood history and don't mind paying for the name and the setting.
The Ritz-Carlton
The Ritz-Carlton, Los Angeles occupies the upper floors of a glass tower at L.A. Live, downtown, all clean lines, dark wood panelling and floor-to-ceiling windows looking over the arena lights and the city grid. The rooms lean quiet and contemporary — espresso machines, plush bedding, designer toiletries — with none of the theatrical history of the west side, but a rooftop pool and spa that feel built for a traveller who wants efficient luxury rather than atmosphere. The crowd is more business and event-driven, shaped by Crypto.com Arena and the Peacock Theater next door.
People who want a modern, well-run downtown base near the arena and theatre district at a lower price.
At $854 the Ritz-Carlton gives up the Beverly Hills Hotel's pet-friendly policy, hot tub, golf access and bar — trading them for its own rooftop, which the Beverly Hills Hotel doesn't have.
The Beverly Hills Hotel is the more beautiful and characterful place to be, simply because it is an actual piece of design history rather than a well-appointed tower.
Service was hit and miss, service with an attitude and when paying 2000 USD a night I would expect service to be outstanding, during breakfast often I was not greeted but said want coffee? and others were greeted etc, so do think service levels are equal to everyone

Iconic building with unmatched history
Staff were friendly
No coffee facility in the room!!
Bath amenities are not plentiful or as high end as I would expect
Bath water stopper didn’t work
No signature scent to the hotel - surprising they haven’t considered that as a branding opportunity
45 minute delay to check in (past 3pm) with no goodwill offer other than a sorry…..
We spent a day and half at this hotel over Christmas and absolutely loved every minute.
This location is modern and stylish and the staff are polished but also very warm.
We enjoyed the Club Lounge and amenities. All were top notch.
The staff are so kind and charming. Josh in the Lounge and Harrison at the Front Desk were among our favorites.
We enjoyed the easy enclosed walk to the J.W. Lobby and the excellent
