Book the Mount Nelson unless the Silo's architecture is the point of the trip. At $1,280 against $2,179 a night, the Mount Nelson costs roughly 40% less, has a far larger review base (933 vs 107) at a slightly higher guest score, and adds pet-friendliness and grounds the Silo cannot match with its rooftop and pool. The Silo's edge is the building itself and its position on the harbour, not the facility list.
The Silo is a converted 1920s grain silo on the working harbour, reworked by Thomas Heatherwick, who carved the industrial concrete shell into a honeycomb of bulging bay windows, so light comes through faceted glass instead of flat panes. The atrium runs the height of the building under a domed skylight, all raw concrete against soft furnishings, with the Zeitz MOCAA museum sitting directly below. Rooms are pared back and modern, pale wood and brass fittings against the old grain-silo texture, and the rooftop bar looks straight out over Table Bay and the working cranes of the port.
Design-minded travellers who want a piece of contemporary architecture and harbour views over garden calm.
The Mount Nelson is the old colonial grande dame, pale pink Cape Dutch-Victorian wings set back from Orange Street at the end of a long palm-lined drive, with nine acres of garden between the hotel and the city. Interiors run to chintz, dark wood, marble bathrooms and the kind of drawing rooms built for afternoon tea, which the hotel still serves formally. It's a short walk from Company Gardens and the Company Gardens end of town, and the pace inside is unhurried in a way the harbourfront hotels aren't.
Travellers wanting an established, garden-set grand hotel with formal service, afternoon tea, and room for pets.
The Mount Nelson gives up the Silo's rooftop terrace and bar, along with the raw industrial architecture and harbourfront setting the Silo trades on.
The Silo is the more striking place to stand in, purely for what Heatherwick did to that old grain elevator, but the Mount Nelson is the more beautiful place to spend a slow afternoon in its gardens.
