The honest take
Mount Nelson comes in at $1,280 a night with a 9.7 guest rating from 933 reviews, against One&Only at $1,328 with a 9.4 rating from 674 reviews. On the numbers alone Mount Nelson wins on both price and satisfaction. One&Only's edge is a golf facility Mount Nelson lacks, and its Waterfront address puts you among the harbour restaurants and shops rather than up in the city gardens.
The look and the feel
One&Only Cape Town
One&Only sits right on the working harbour of the V&A Waterfront, a contemporary build with long glass frontages and private balconies angled at Table Mountain. Rooms lean modern-luxe: marble bathrooms, rain showers, neutral palettes, the kind of crisp minimalism you get from a design-led resort brand rather than an old hotel with layered history. The public spaces are built for a resort holiday - infinity pool, spa, a movie lounge - and the crowd is families and couples on a big occasion, drawn to the marina view and the polish.
One&Only suits people who want a modern resort experience tied to the Waterfront's shops, restaurants and harbour views.
Mount Nelson
The Mount Nelson is the pink Edwardian grande dame set back from Orange Street behind its own palm-lined drive, opened in 1899 and long the address for anyone arriving in Cape Town by ship. Its wings each have their own character, with antique and specially designed furniture, high ceilings, and gardens that give the whole property a sense of unhurried scale rather than dense resort planning. Afternoon tea in the lounge is a genuine institution here, not a gesture, and the atmosphere favours slow mornings on a terrace over a poolside DJ.
Mount Nelson suits people who want historic grandeur, gardens and quiet, and don't mind being a short drive from the harbour.
Choosing Mount Nelson over One&Only means giving up the on-site golf facility, though little else on the lists separates them; the real difference is address and the kind of view from your balcony.
Mount Nelson is the more beautiful place to actually be in - its Edwardian architecture, gardens and layered history give it a character no contemporary resort build can manufacture.

“An exceptional stay with phenomenal staff and wonderful facilities”
We had an amazing stay at One&Only Cape Town. The facilities were excellent, but what really stood out was the staff. Everyone was phenomenal, incredibly attentive, caring, and welcoming throughout our stay. The view of Table Mountain was exquisite, and the location is very safe and secure.
The property itself has so much to offer, and I would actually recommend staying here when you have enough time to enjoy the ho
The only downside was the soundproofing in the room. We could hear quite a bit of noise from outside, which affected my sleep a little. Other than that, everything about our stay was wonderful.

“Beautiful property with wonderful facilities and friendly, attentive staff”
Beautiful property very well located in V&A Waterfront
Two minor issues - no tissues beside the bed or anywhere in the bedroom and the length of time for hot water. In a water scarce location, having to run the tap or shower for quite some time before the water is hot is not good
Such a stunning day. Amazing atmosphere and food. Thuli looked well after us and even chose all the tea for us. It was excellent.
