The honest take
Book the Roosevelt if you want the grand New Orleans hotel experience: the spa, pet-friendly rooms, hot tub and that lobby are worth the $386 versus $298. Book the JW Marriott if you want a reliable, well-rated 4-star on Canal Street for less, with Fogo de Chao downstairs and a slightly higher guest score at 9.1 versus 8.9. Both sit within 0.3km of each other in the same stretch of the CBD/French Quarter edge, so location isn't really the deciding factor here.
The look and the feel
The Roosevelt Hotel New Orleans
The Roosevelt occupies a 1893 building that's been a New Orleans landmark for over a century, its block-long lobby lined with gold leaf ceilings, marble floors and a corridor of chandeliers that runs the length of the building like something out of a Gilded Age fever dream. The Sazerac Bar and the Blue Room have hosted jazz and cocktail culture since the 1930s, all dark wood and brass fittings, and the whole place trades on a sense of old New Orleans money and ceremony. Rooms lean traditional and upholstered rather than sleek, with the kind of heavy drapery and gilt-edged mirrors that suit a hotel built to impress rather than to disappear into the background.
Guests who want the theatre of a historic Southern grand hotel and are willing to pay for the spa and pool.
JW Marriott New Orleans
The JW Marriott sits in a modern Canal Street tower, all large windows and contemporary furnishings rather than antique flourish, with ergonomic workspaces and plush seating pitched at business travellers and steakhouse diners rather than history tourists. The lobby lounge does handcrafted cocktails but skips the theatrical scale of a heritage property, and Fogo de Chao anchors the dining rather than a jazz room. It's a well-run, comfortable chain hotel with no pretensions to being anything else.
Travellers who want a dependable, contemporary room near the action without paying for heritage architecture they won't use.
At $298 the JW Marriott gives up the spa, the hot tub and pet-friendly rooms that the Roosevelt offers, along with the outdoor pool and gym scale that come with a much larger historic property.
The Roosevelt is the more beautiful place to simply stand in, with its gilded lobby corridor and century of jazz-age atmosphere that no contemporary tower can replicate.

I don't know what happened with my Christmastime 2025 review, but it never showed up. My husband and I come in to New Orleans a lot from The Mississippi Gulfcoast. My husband is a graduate of Brother Martin H.S., and lived in NOLA so we stay for many functions. He surprised me and booked us at The Roosevelt Christmas 2025. When the doors were thrust open, immediately knew it was going to be quite a magical experience

“Exceptional Stay with One Dining Disappointment”
Our experience at the Roosevelt Hotel was outstanding from the moment we arrived until the moment we reluctantly left. Every staff member treated us with warmth and professionalism, especially Stephen, one of the bellmen, who went above and beyond throughout our stay. He was always courteous, made sure my family never ran out of water, and recommended several restaurants, including Domenica.

“Great Getaway to the Roosevelt Hotel”
We just got back from a one night getaway to the beautiful Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans. The lobby was beautiful, and I had a ball as a history teacher exploring the historical architecture and pieces they had throughout the hotel. The staff were all very friendly, and went above and beyond to make sure all of our needs were met. We stayed in a Luxury King Suite, and it was beyond our expectation. The beds were ex

“Great hotel-need to fix gym”
The JW is one of my favorite hotels. As we are a Tulane family, we stay there a lot. LOVE the doormen-they are hysterical, friendly and the nicest people.
The gym however was disappointing this last time. One half barely had a/c. The 2 Peloton bikes did not work: the seat on one would not stay up (liability for sure) and its pedals were not aligned, the other was not calibrated. I hope they take care of this ASAP as
