The honest take
Book the Marriott Warehouse Arts District if you want a well-run, modern hotel near the Convention Center at less than a quarter of the price, and it actually holds a higher guest rating at 9.6 versus the Ritz's 9.1. Book the Ritz-Carlton if you want the Canal Street address, the spa, and the sense of occasion that a grand hotel brings, and are willing to pay $613 against $149 for it. They sit 1.4km apart, in different parts of the city, and answer different questions.
The look and the feel
The Ritz-Carlton
The Ritz-Carlton New Orleans occupies a former Maison Blanche department store on Canal Street, a 1908 Beaux-Arts building with a marble-clad lobby, wrought iron, and tall arched windows that let Gulf-Coast light pool across the floor. The Davenport Lounge does live jazz most nights, in keeping with the city outside the door, and the 25,000-square-foot spa is a genuine draw rather than a listed afterthought. Rooms carry the plush, slightly formal Ritz house style, heavy drapery, dark wood, brass fittings, aimed at guests who want ceremony with their stay.
Travellers who want a historic, atmospheric grand hotel on Canal Street and are happy to pay for the spa, the jazz lounge, and the sense of occasion.
New Orleans Marriott Warehouse Arts District
The Marriott Warehouse Arts District is a modern convention hotel a few blocks from the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, with newly redesigned rooms, flat-screen TVs, and the brisk, efficient feel of a business property built for turnover rather than lingering. The lobby is clean-lined and unfussy, the restaurant serves an international menu rather than anything distinctly New Orleans, and the whole place is built around convenience: business center, M Club access, easy walk to the French Quarter. It draws conference-goers and practical travellers rather than people chasing atmosphere.
Convention-goers and budget-conscious travellers who want a reliable, well-reviewed modern hotel a short walk from the Quarter without paying luxury rates.
At $149 the Marriott gives up the spa, the pet allowance, and the hot tub that come with the Ritz-Carlton's rate, along with the historic building and the live jazz lounge.
The Ritz-Carlton is the more beautiful place to actually stand in, a converted department store with marble and ironwork that New Orleans built its grandeur around, while the Marriott is a competent modern box.
