The honest take

Book the Hotel Monteleone. At $338 a night against $638 for the Windsor Court, it gives you the French Quarter address, a rotating Carousel Bar, a rooftop pool and a spa, and it does so with nearly three times the review volume backing up its 9.2 rating. The Windsor Court scores marginally higher and adds a casino, breakfast and its own rooftop, but at nearly double the price on a smaller sample of reviews, it is the choice for someone who wants hush over spectacle. Both sit within 0.6 km of each other in New Orleans, so location is not really the deciding factor.

The look and the feel

The Windsor Court

The Windsor Court occupies the CBD end of the Quarter, a tower built in the 1980s but dressed entirely in old-world English costume: oil paintings in gilt frames, Italian marble underfoot, hunting-lodge armchairs in deep burgundy velvet. The Polo Lounge does live jazz over cocktails in a room that feels more Mayfair club than Louisiana, and the Grill Room is the only AAA Four-Diamond dining room in the city. It is quiet, formal, and a little hushed for New Orleans standards, the kind of place where the noise of Bourbon Street feels like a rumour rather than a fact of life.

Guests who want a formal, quieter luxury stay with a serious restaurant and don't need to be in the thick of the Quarter's noise.

Hotel Monteleone

The Monteleone is the real French Quarter article, a Beaux-Arts pile on Royal Street that has stood since 1886, with a lobby of marble columns and gold-leaf trim that has watched generations of writers drink in its bar. The Carousel Bar itself is the draw, a slowly rotating circular bar under a red-and-gold circus-tent canopy, a fixture since the 1940s that has pulled in Faulkner, Capote and Tennessee Williams. Rooms run to earth tones and high ceilings with granite baths and robes, unglamorous compared to the suites a block away, but the building itself, with its heated rooftop pool looking over the Quarter's rooftops, has more genuine New Orleans atmosphere in its bones than most hotels manage to fake.

Anyone who wants to be inside the French Quarter's history and energy, a block from Bourbon Street, without paying luxury-tower prices.

At $338 the Monteleone gives up a casino, breakfast service, and the Windsor Court's own rooftop amenity, though it has its own rooftop pool and spa to compensate; what you're really losing is that hushed CBD formality.

The Monteleone is the more characterful place to be, a genuine 19th-century French Quarter landmark with a rotating bar that has outlived a century of literary drinkers, against the Windsor Court's well-executed but manufactured English-manor atmosphere.

“Windsor exceeds expectations every time”

The Windsor Court continues to live up to its standards. It is refreshing to see that in this day in age. The staff is professional and caring. They also seem legitimately happy to work there. The hotel has high standards and is well worth the value. We will be back a fourth time. Thank you and keep up the good work.

“One of the best hotel experiences I’ve had.”

STRONGLY RECOMMENDED! I stayed with my wife for our anniversary and we both had a wonderful experience. When we left, we felt like we had a peaceful reset from a relaxing vacation. The service is another level and I’ve rarely experienced a service that is so attentive. The room was immaculate and spacious. The restaurant was beautiful and we loved the vibe of the bar when music was playing at night. The only thing to
