The honest take
Book the InterContinental unless you specifically want the spa: at $171 versus $613 a night it's a third of the price, rated nearly as well by guests (9.0 vs 9.1) across a far larger review base (2,301 vs 507), and it lacks nothing on the facility list except the spa and hot tub. The Ritz-Carlton earns its premium with a 25,000-square-foot spa, live jazz at The Davenport Lounge, and the kind of pampering detail (shoeshine, plush robes) that justifies a splurge stay. Both sit on Canal Street/St Charles Ave, half a kilometre apart, so location isn't the deciding factor. This is a budget-versus-indulgence call, not a quality one.
The look and the feel
The Ritz-Carlton
The Ritz-Carlton occupies the old Maison Blanche building on Canal Street, a Beaux-Arts department store from 1908 with a grand marble lobby that still carries some of that retail-palace scale. Expect chandeliers, heavy drapery, dark wood panelling and the hushed, upholstered feel of a hotel built to make you feel attended to at every turn. The Davenport Lounge does live jazz most nights, which fits the city's musical DNA better than most chain hotels manage, and M bistro leans into upscale Cajun and Caribbean flavours rather than generic hotel fare. It draws an older, dressier, special-occasion crowd who want the shoeshine and the robe as much as the room.
Right for travellers who want an occasion hotel with a proper spa, live jazz downstairs, and the fuss of Ritz-Carlton service.
InterContinental New Orleans by IHG
The InterContinental is a more straightforwardly modern high-rise on St Charles Avenue, the wide, oak-lined boulevard where the streetcar runs past Garden District mansions. The listing points to standard-issue comfort rather than architectural drama: cable TVs, tea and coffee facilities, an outdoor pool, a 24-hour gym. Veranda and SoifFaim handle food and cocktails without pretension, and the appeal here is convenience and value rather than atmosphere; you're close to Harrah's and the French Quarter, and the money saved buys you a few extra nights out.
Right for travellers who want reliable comfort, a pool, and walkable access to the Quarter without paying luxury prices.
The InterContinental has no spa and no hot tub, so anyone wanting a treatment day or a soak has to leave the building; everything else on the two lists lines up.
The Ritz-Carlton is the more beautiful building to stand in, converting a century-old department store's marble and scale into something genuinely atmospheric rather than merely comfortable.

“Great location”
The location was excellent. Very central and all the main areas were walking distance.
Carpets were old and rooms seemed dated for a ritz property

“Good location, comfortable but I’d definitely bring ear plugs”
The hotel is very well located in the CBD of NOLA, the rooms are spacious and comfortable.
I must comment that none of us got a good nights sleep, the noise from the streetcar is not terrible but noticeable but the biggest issue was numerous other guests returning from a night on the town who caused significant noise and disturbance throughout each night.
The bathrooms could do with some significant upgrad
