“No Marriott Bonvoy points”
The hotel and staff were lovely. However, they will not award me my Marriott Bonvoy points as the hotel was booked via a travel agent rather than direct.

The Sofitel Mexico City Reforma is the clear pick here: it's less than half the price of the Ritz-Carlton ($537 vs $1,130), carries a higher guest rating (9.8 vs 9), and has more than double the review volume (552 vs 217), suggesting a broader and more consistently satisfied guest base. Both sit on Paseo de la Reforma within a kilometre of each other, both offer indoor pools, restaurants, bars and concierge service, so the facility gap is negligible. The Ritz-Carlton's case rests entirely on brand prestige and presumably more polished execution of the same amenities, not on anything extra listed. For most travellers, the Sofitel is the smarter booking.
The Ritz-Carlton Mexico City occupies one of the upper floors of a Reforma skyscraper, so the signature of the place is height and glass rather than historic texture — expect the brand's familiar formula of marble lobbies, low lighting, heavy drapery and a hush engineered to feel expensive. The public rooms lean corporate-luxury: dark wood, brass fittings, a bar built for after-work dealmaking and hotel-brand consistency over local character. It's the kind of space where the view out over the Ángel de la Independencia and the city grid does more work than the interior design itself. The crowd is business travellers, expense accounts, and guests who want the Ritz name attached to their trip.
Guests who want the reassurance of a globally recognised luxury brand and don't mind paying a premium for it.
The Sofitel Reforma reads as a more contemporary, slightly cooler interpretation of the same five-star Reforma-tower format — French-inflected in name and presumably in some design touches, with the about text emphasising clean-lined, air-conditioned rooms, flat-screen TVs and elegant but unfussy decor rather than heavy period detail. The public areas — restaurant, bar, indoor pool — read functional-elegant rather than theatrical, aimed at travellers who want polish without ceremony. Its proximity to the US Embassy suggests a guest mix skewing toward diplomatic and business visitors alongside leisure travellers drawn by the review scores. It's a hotel that seems to earn its reputation through consistency rather than spectacle.
Travellers who want five-star comfort, high guest satisfaction and genuine value on the same stretch of Reforma.
Neither hotel lists facilities the other lacks — pool, restaurant, bar, concierge and WiFi appear at both — so the difference is really about brand cachet, room refinement and perceived exclusivity rather than anything on the amenity sheet.
The Ritz-Carlton likely edges it on sheer polish and views from height, but the Sofitel's higher ratings across far more reviews suggest it's the more consistently satisfying place to actually stay.

“Insulation is so bad you feel like you’re sleeping next to a truck stop and autobahn.”
“This hotel is a quiet, luxurious escape in the middle of the hustle and bustle of wonderful Mexico City.”
Sofitel guests come away happier, as reviews consistently praise quiet, clean rooms and friendly staff with only a minor billing gripe, while Ritz-Carlton guests repeatedly complain about serious street noise disrupting sleep.

“The Sofitel service and standards we’be come to expect, excellent!”
Lovely pool, great breakfast
The rooftop restaurant charges an exorbitant up front fee, and when we didn’t spend it all in the first night refused to give us credit to spend it another day. Not very guest friendly…
This hotel is a quiet, luxurious escape in the middle of the hustle and bustle of wonderful Mexico City. The staff were so warm and friendly, always happy to provide tips on the city. Rooms were immaculately clean and well maintained.
