The honest take

La Valise runs $1,008 a night against Casa Polanco's $1,505, and scores higher with guests (9.8 vs 9.6 across a similar number of reviews). Casa Polanco answers with a spa and fitness centre, which La Valise doesn't list, plus its Polanco address near the Anthropology Museum. But La Valise sits in Roma Norte, arguably the more interesting neighbourhood to be based in right now, and ties its room service to Rosetta, a genuinely major restaurant. On price, rating and address, La Valise is the easier call.

The look and the feel

Casa Polanco Hotel Boutique

Casa Polanco is a boutique conversion in the low-rise residential grid of Polanco, the kind of quiet leafy street where embassies and old money houses sit behind walls. The listing points to a terrace, free bikes and a fitness centre rather than any grand public rooms, which suggests a smaller, more inward property built around a courtyard or converted house rather than a landmark building. Balcony rooms with city views and a coffee machine and minibar in each suggest comfort pitched at a business or older-leisure traveller rather than anyone chasing atmosphere. It reads as calm, residential, and low on drama.

Guests who want a quieter Polanco base with a gym, spa access and easy reach of the museums, and don't need street life on their doorstep.

La Valise Mexico City, Member of Small Luxury Hotels

La Valise occupies a townhouse in Roma Norte, the district of jacaranda-lined streets, art deco facades and a dense scene of galleries, mezcalerías and independent design shops that has become the city's most magnetic neighbourhood for visitors under fifty. Small Luxury Hotels membership and the phrase 'uniquely decorated suites' point to a small, design-led property where each room has its own furniture and colour rather than a repeated template, closer in spirit to a private house than a chain hotel. The Rosetta room-service tie-in matters: that kitchen, run by Elena Reygadas, is one of the more serious in Latin America, all handmade pasta, sourdough and produce-driven plates, and having it delivered to a suite is a different proposition to a standard hotel restaurant. Expect a concierge-run, intimate operation rather than a lobby with a bar scene.

Design-minded travellers who want to be inside Roma Norte's street life and eat Rosetta-level food without leaving their suite.

At $1,008, La Valise gives up an on-site spa and fitness centre, which Casa Polanco has; anyone wanting a gym or treatments in-house will have to go elsewhere or to Casa Polanco.

La Valise is the more characterful place to actually stay, given uniquely decorated suites in a Roma Norte townhouse and a direct line to one of the city's best kitchens, against Casa Polanco's more generic boutique-hotel comforts.

“Just... AMAZING”

We had a wonderful stay at La Valise. The entire hotel team is absolutely incredible: always attentive, caring, and available. They organized some amazing experiences for us and truly made our stay unforgettable. A huge thank you to the whole team! I couldn’t recommend this hotel more. Incredible team, incredible hotel, incredible stay!

“Great hotel, but was charged for 2 coffee pods!!”

Great room. Service was good, nothing outstanding. Nice and cute small hotel. However, they charged me $7 for 2 Nespresso pods. Really?? Yes, really!!! With the price of the room, they shouldn’t nickel and dime little stuff. I have never, ever been charged for coffee pods! For that reason, I will look for another option next time!

“Can't wait to be back there”

Beautiful rooms with friendly and professional staff. Excellent location in walking distance to everything we wanted to experience. Memorable experience. Will be back
