The honest take

Both sit at 9/10 with similar review counts, but the price gap is enormous: $1,133 versus $133 a night for comparable five-star ratings. The Ritz-Carlton sits on Paseo de la Reforma, walking distance to the Angel of Independence and Chapultepec, with an indoor pool and pet allowance the Santa Fe lacks. The JW Marriott is 10.9km away in Santa Fe, a business district, and matches it on pool, spa, restaurants and gym at a fraction of the cost. For most travellers the Santa Fe property is the obvious booking; pay the Ritz premium only if Reforma's location and brand weight matter to you specifically.

The look and the feel

The Ritz-Carlton

The Ritz-Carlton occupies a glass tower on Reforma, Mexico City's grand nineteenth-century boulevard, and trades on that address as much as anything inside. Expect the house Ritz-Carlton language: marble lobby floors, dark wood panelling, chandeliers, a restrained palette of cream and bronze that reads as international five-star rather than distinctly Mexican. The rooms look toward the Angel of Independence and the wooded start of Chapultepec, and the crowd is diplomats, visiting executives and travellers who want a known brand in the capital's most photographed street. It is polished rather than intimate, built to reassure rather than surprise.

Travellers who want to walk out the door onto Reforma and have Chapultepec and the Angel of Independence within reach, and who value the Ritz-Carlton name.

JW Marriott Hotel Mexico City Santa Fe

The JW Marriott Santa Fe sits in the city's newer business district, a glass-and-steel enclave of corporate towers rather than boulevard grandeur. Inside, the listing describes marble bathrooms, flat-screen TVs and a fairly standard contemporary luxury fit-out: neutral tones, big windows, the kind of room built for executives on multi-night stays. The outdoor pool, hot tub, steam room and spa give it more on-site relaxation infrastructure than the description of the Ritz's amenities suggests, and the Italian and international restaurants aim at business dinners rather than tourist appeal. It reads efficient and comfortable rather than atmospheric.

Business travellers or anyone wanting five-star comfort, a proper pool and spa, at a fraction of the cost, without needing to be near the historic centre.

The Santa Fe property gives up the indoor pool and pet-friendly policy the Ritz offers, and it sits in a corporate district rather than on Reforma, so evenings out mean a taxi rather than a stroll to the Angel of Independence.

The Ritz-Carlton is the more characterful place to be, simply by virtue of its address on Reforma and the views that come with it; the Santa Fe property is comfortable but interchangeable with any well-run business hotel.

“No Marriott Bonvoy points”

The hotel and staff were lovely. However, they will not award me my Marriott Bonvoy points as the hotel was booked via a travel agent rather than direct.

“Can’t book my return visit fast enough 10/10”

Wow!!! What an absolutely stunning hotel in Mexico City! We were welcomed by Andrea and let me tell you the stay only got better from there. Fernanda and Natalia from the guest relations team went absolutely above and beyond to make the stay something so much more special than we could have ever imagined and if they ever read this thank you! Noemi G for always having the room match the beauty of the view! The view

“Good over all experience.”

The location, the bed, the place.

Customer service was more a "want to" than a hotel ingrained value. When asking for an early (30 min) early check in, the response over the phone was a short clear "no". When asking for coffee cups in the room, the response was far from "we'll send them". Need to ask, why are there no coffee cups in the room? Just p
