The honest take
These two share a building at 900 W. Olympic — the Ritz-Carlton and JW Marriott occupy the same L.A. LIVE tower, so location is a non-issue. At $854 versus $483 a night, the Ritz is nearly double, and the JW backs that up with 770 reviews at 8.9 versus the Ritz's thinner 131-review base. Unless you specifically want the Ritz's rooftop access and the extra layer of formality that comes with the name, the JW gets you into the same complex, with a hot tub and bar the Ritz's listing doesn't mention, for far less.
The look and the feel
The Ritz-Carlton
The Ritz-Carlton here occupies the upper floors of the L.A. LIVE tower, a glass high-rise戏 that trades old-world Ritz signatures — the crystal, the wing chairs — for a more contemporary downtown L.A. register: dark wood, low lighting, floor-to-ceiling views over the arena lights and the sprawl beyond. It's corporate-luxury rather than heritage-luxury, built for the convention and entertainment crowd who want the name on the door and a rooftop to retreat to after events at Crypto.com Arena next door. The 123 rooms keep things tight and controlled rather than sprawling, with the spa and multiple restaurants doing the heavy lifting on atmosphere.
Guests who want the Ritz-Carlton name, a quieter high-floor feel, and don't mind paying nearly double for it.
JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE
The JW Marriott sits in the same tower complex, several floors down in price and register: big glassy public spaces built for volume rather than intimacy, an outdoor rooftop pool with the same skyline view sold at a lower price, and four restaurants aimed at conference groups and event-night crowds heading to L.A. LIVE. The rooms lean on straightforward modern hotel comforts — flat-screen, dock, Wi-Fi — rather than any particular design statement. It reads as competent, busy, slightly generic downtown hotel, not a place with a strong personality of its own.
Guests going to a game or concert at L.A. LIVE who want a reliable, well-reviewed room without paying luxury-brand prices.
At $483 the JW does without the Ritz's rooftop access, though it counters with its own hot tub and bar that the Ritz listing doesn't call out — so the trade is less about missing amenities and more about brand polish and the smaller, more curated room count.
Neither is architecturally distinguished — this is a shared glass tower built for scale — but the Ritz's tighter room count and higher-floor positioning make it the more composed, less convention-hall version of the same building.

We spent a day and half at this hotel over Christmas and absolutely loved every minute.
This location is modern and stylish and the staff are polished but also very warm.
We enjoyed the Club Lounge and amenities. All were top notch.
