The Danieli, at $2,136 against the Gritti's $2,990, gives you the Four Seasons machine, a lagoon-facing rooftop restaurant and a bar, but no on-site spa. Both are five-star Venice institutions a few minutes apart on foot; the choice is really about canal versus lagoon, and which public rooms you want to sit in each evening.

A 15th-century palazzo on the Grand Canal, once home to the Doge Andrea Gritti, its ground-floor rooms still hung with Murano glass chandeliers, damask walls and gilt mirrors that have barely changed since the days Hemingway drank there. The waterside terrace puts you eye-level with the vaporetti and the Salute church across the water, and the Club del Doge restaurant runs on white tablecloths and old-school Venetian formality. At the lower price, the Danieli gives up the on-site spa the Gritti has, so anyone wanting massages or treatments in-house will need to look elsewhere or book the Gritti.

My partner knew that I had always loved the way Venice looked in The Tourist. Not the story, but the city itself. So during our European trip, he chose this hotel. We hired a water taxi and arrived exactly as Venice should be experienced, by water, right to the hotel’s entrance.
