The honest take
Palazzo Venart is the better booking if budget stretches to it: a Grand Canal address, a two-Michelin-starred restaurant, and a spa Palazzina Grassi doesn't have, at $1,279 a night. Palazzina Grassi is $213 cheaper and rated nearly as high, trading the spa and the canal-front pedigree for Starck's design and a location near San Marco. Both sit within 0.8km of each other in central Venice, so the choice is really about interiors and what you want dinner to be, not geography.
The look and the feel
Hotel Palazzina Grassi
This is Philippe Starck's first Italian hotel, and it shows in every surface: smoked mirrors, Murano glass reworked into something spikier and more modern, velvet in ink blues and blacks against original Gothic stonework. The palazzo's bones are 15th-century Venetian but Starck has layered them with chandeliers that look like they've been dipped in tar, and a bar that draws a cocktail crowd rather than a tea-and-scones one. It's theatrical rather than hushed, the kind of place where the lobby is meant to be photographed.
Design-minded travellers who want Starck's theatrical, modern take on Venice and don't need a spa or a Grand Canal frontage.
Palazzo Venart Luxury Hotel
Palazzo Venart is a proper 16th-century palazzo on the Grand Canal, restored with a lighter, more classical hand: marble bathrooms, damask and gilt kept in check rather than piled on, a courtyard garden that's rare for this city and gives the whole place a hush that canal-front hotels rarely manage. Glam, the two-Michelin-starred restaurant inside, pulls a serious dining crowd on its own merits, so the hotel's public rooms carry a different energy in the evening than a normal residents-only dining room.
Guests who want the classical palazzo experience with a Michelin-starred restaurant and canal views, and are willing to pay for it.
Booking Palazzina Grassi means giving up the spa that Palazzo Venart has, along with the direct Grand Canal position and the in-house two-Michelin-starred dining.
Palazzo Venart is the more beautiful place to simply be in, the garden courtyard and canal light doing what Starck's mirrors can only gesture at, though Palazzina Grassi is the more interesting one to look at.
