The honest take
Both sit in San Marco, three minutes apart, so location is not the deciding factor. The Gritti costs nearly three times as much and gives you a Grand Canal palazzo with real history and a spa; Nolinski, at $1,072, has an indoor pool, a bar, a rooftop and pet allowance the Gritti lacks, plus the higher guest rating from far more reviewers. Unless you specifically want to sleep where Hemingway and Churchill did, Nolinski is the better booking on facilities and value.

A 15th-century palazzo on the Grand Canal, restored under Starwood's Luxury Collection with the decorator's hand of the late Chuzo Sato era still visible in the damasks and Murano glass. Rooms are heavy with brocade, gilt mirrors and antique Venetian furniture; the water entrance and the Riva lounge terrace put you eye-level with the vaporetti and the domes of Santa Maria della Salute. Nolinski Venezia
Nolinski occupies a former bank building given the full Jean-Louis Deniot treatment: Art Deco-inflected marble floors, brass fittings, deep green and burgundy upholstery, a mood closer to a smart Parisian address than a typical Venetian hotel. The indoor pool and rooftop are unusual for the historic centre, and the bar has the low-lit, tailored feel Deniot brings to all his interiors. It suits a design-literate traveller who wants Venice without the doily.
Guests who want a design-forward five-star with a pool and bar, at roughly a third of the price, and don't need Grand Canal frontage.
Nolinski's guests give up the on-site spa and the Gritti's canal-front pedigree; everything else, including pool, bar and rooftop, actually favours the cheaper hotel.
