The honest take

Sofitel Reforma sits on the city's grand boulevard for $540, with an indoor pool, near-perfect guest scores from over 500 reviews, and pet-friendliness the other lacks. JW Marriott Santa Fe, in the Santa Fe business district 12km away, runs $132 with a spa, steam room, hot tub and outdoor pool, plus two restaurants. On facilities alone the JW gives up nothing, so this is really a choice between neighbourhood and price: Reforma's skyline and embassy row, or Santa Fe's corporate towers at a fraction of the cost.

The look and the feel

Sofitel Mexico City Reforma

Reforma is Mexico City's Champs-Élysées, a wide tree-lined avenue of glass towers, roundabouts with monuments, and Sunday cyclists when it closes to traffic. The Sofitel here trades in the brand's usual polish, flat-screens, marble-adjacent bathrooms, a seating nook in every room, an indoor pool for the smog-heavy days when you don't want to be outside. It reads corporate-international rather than distinctly Mexican, but the location does the work: step out and you're by the US Embassy, the Angel of Independence, the museums of Chapultepec within reach.

Sofitel Reforma suits travellers who want to walk out the door into the city's grandest avenue and its museums, embassies and evening cycling scene.

JW Marriott Hotel Mexico City Santa Fe

Santa Fe is Mexico City's newer business district, a cluster of glass office towers and shopping centres built on reclaimed land west of the historic core, with little street life after dark. The JW Marriott plays to that audience: an outdoor pool and hot tub, a proper spa with steam room and beauty treatments, Italian and international dining, 24-hour room service. It's built for executives on expense accounts and conference stays rather than for wandering the neighbourhood, since there isn't much neighbourhood to wander.

JW Santa Fe suits business travellers and conference-goers who want spa, gym and pool facilities within a self-contained tower district, at less than a quarter of Reforma's rate.

The JW's guest score is a notch lower and it draws far fewer reviews, and it doesn't take pets the way Sofitel does; otherwise its facility list is actually the richer one, with a spa and hot tub Sofitel lacks.

Reforma is the more beautiful place to be, not because the hotel itself is architecturally distinct but because the avenue outside it is one of the great urban boulevards in Latin America, and that context does more for the stay than any spa in Santa Fe.

“The Sofitel service and standards we’be come to expect, excellent!”

Lovely pool, great breakfast

The rooftop restaurant charges an exorbitant up front fee, and when we didn’t spend it all in the first night refused to give us credit to spend it another day. Not very guest friendly…

“Good over all experience.”

The location, the bed, the place.

Customer service was more a "want to" than a hotel ingrained value. When asking for an early (30 min) early check in, the response over the phone was a short clear "no". When asking for coffee cups in the room, the response was far from "we'll send them". Need to ask, why are there no coffee cups in the room? Just p
